When the knower of dharma, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, had thus spoken, Bhishma, grandsire of the Kurus, spoke this word: "Do not fear, O tiger among the Kurus: can a dog possibly slay a lion? An auspicious and rightly charted path was chosen by me here long ago. Just as dogs, gathering around a sleeping lion, would all bark together, so too do these lords of the earth. Around the sleeping lion of the Vrishnis, these, standing before him, bark, enraged, O dear one — dogs near a lion."

The image is precise and comforting: kings fearsome in appearance are but 'dogs' before the 'sleeping lion,' Krishna. It is significant that the seeming danger dissolves the moment the true nature of the sides is discerned: the fury of the many is powerless against the One who is above all. The verse teaches us not to fear the noise and multitude of evil: barking is not strength, and a horde of the powerless cannot overcome the one Almighty. And just as a lion is not troubled by barking, so the Lord remains unshaken by the abuse of the powerless. Whoever perceives who stands before him and who opposes him attains Bhishma's peace — 'do not fear'; fear is born of failing to understand how insignificant evil is before the Supreme.
