Yudhishthira stakes the very chariot that brought him to the game: the instrument of the journey becomes the loss itself. It is telling how thoroughly he lists its merits — even in parting with it, the righteous man honors what he holds dear; he does not cast it away carelessly. The verse teaches that the gambler loses, piece by piece, precisely what he treasured: it is not the superfluous that is staked, but the best. And the narrator no longer conceals it: "having resorted to deceit" — the loaded dice are named outright. Thus behind the brilliance of the description hides a bare untruth: however much the stake is praised, the outcome is rigged. The chariot that carried him to disaster is itself the first thing swallowed by disaster; the very road to ruin becomes ruin's prey.
