[Vidura:] "For excessive [abusive] words issue from the mouth, by which the wounded one grieves day and night; they fall upon the very tenderest places of another; let the wise not hurl them at others. For once a goat, when its knife was lost, cast the earth aside with its hooves and dug it up -- to a terrible cutting of its own throat; so do not you dig up enmity with the sons of Pandu."

The parable of the goat strikes at the very heart: the animal itself dug up the knife by which it was slaughtered. Telling is the fact that the evil we dig up for others turns back upon us: the enmity sown by the Kauravas is that very knife which will cut their own throats. The verse teaches that one who stirs up strife digs his own destruction: hatred, like an unearthed blade, does not discriminate whose hand lifted it. And the word about scorching speech, at which the wounded one "grieves day and night," reveals the long reach of vengeance: a wound inflicted by words does not heal quickly. One who digs up enmity is like that goat, preparing a knife for his own throat; and there is no greater folly than dragging into the light, with one's own hands, the very instrument of one's own ruin.
