सान्त्व्यमानो वीज्यमानः पार्थेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥
स्विद्यते च महाबाहुर् अन्तर्दाहेन वीर्यवान् ॥
क्रुद्धस्य तस्य स्रोतोभ्यः कर्णादिभ्यो नराधिप ॥
सधूमः सस्फुलिङ्गार्चिः पावकः समजायत ॥
भ्रुकुटीपुटदुष्प्रेक्ष्यम् अभवत् तस्य तन् मुखम् ॥
युगान्तकाले संप्राप्ते कृतान्तस्येव रूपिणः ॥

svidyate ca mahābāhur antardāhena vīryavān ||
kruddhasya tasya srotobhyaḥ karṇādibhyo narādhipa ||
sadhūmaḥ sasphuliṅgārciḥ pāvakaḥ samajāyata ||
bhrukuṭīpuṭaduṣprekṣyam abhavat tasya tan mukham ||
yugāntakāle saṃprāpte kṛtāntasyeva rūpiṇaḥ ||
Being soothed and fanned by Partha, untiring in action, the mighty-armed, valorous [Bhima] was drenched in sweat from an inner burning. From him, enraged, from his channels — from his ears and the rest, O lord of men — there arose a smoking fire with sparks and tongues of flame. His face, with knitted brows, became unbearable to behold — like the face of Kritanta embodied, when the hour of the eon's end arrives.

Restrained anger does not go out but grows white-hot within: the flame issuing from Bhima's very body reveals an indignation for which the bounds of flesh are too narrow. The comparison with Kritanta at the end of the eon is not accidental: in Bhima is foreseen the coming agent of fated retribution, for whom present patience is only an ending held back until its time. It is significant that his brother fans him with coolness: the love of kin cools what would otherwise consume everything at once. The verse teaches that suppressed righteous fury does not vanish but ripens, like a hidden fire; and that the greatest strength, in such moments, shows itself not in the blow but in the willingness to burn within, submitting to dharma and to the elder.
