बद्धं सेतुं को नु भिन्द्याद् धमेच् छान्तं च पावकम् ॥
शमे धृतान् पुनः पार्थान् कोपयेत् को नु भारत ॥
स्मरन्तं त्वाम् आजमीढ स्मारयिष्याम्य् अहं पुनः ॥
शास्त्रं न शास्ति दुर्बुद्धिं श्रेयसे वेतराय वा ॥
न वै वृद्धो बालमतिर् भवेद् राजन् कथं चन ॥
त्वन्नेत्राः सन्तु ते पुत्रा मा त्वां दीर्णाः प्रहासिषुः ॥
शमेन धर्मेण परस्य बुद्ध्या; जाता बुद्धिः सास्तु ते मा प्रतीपा ॥
प्रध्वंसिनी क्रूरसमाहिता श्रीर्; मृदुप्रौढा गच्छति पुत्रपौत्रान् ॥

śamena dharmeṇa parasya buddhyā; jātā buddhiḥ sāstu te mā pratīpā ||
pradhvaṃsinī krūrasamāhitā śrīr; mṛduprauḍhā gacchati putrapautrān ||
[Gandhari:] "Who then would breach a dam already built, or fan a fire already quenched? Who would provoke anew the Parthas settled in peace, O Bharata? You yourself remember this, O Ajamidha, but I will remind you again: scripture does not instruct the ill-minded, whether toward good or otherwise. Let an old man never, in any way, O king, have the mind of a child; let your sons be guided by you, and let them not abandon you, torn asunder by strife. Let your understanding be born of peace, dharma, and the counsel of the wise -- not perverse; for glory amassed through cruelty is doomed to perish, while glory grown in gentleness passes on to sons and grandsons."

Gandhari sets forth a law of the succession of glory: what is gained through cruelty perishes together with its gainer, while what is nurtured in gentleness and dharma is handed down to one's descendants. The images of the dam and the quenched fire expose the madness of those ready to demolish a peace hard-won and rekindle an extinguished enmity. Bitter is her word about an old man of "childish mind": decrepitude without wisdom is more dangerous than youthful folly, for it is clothed in power. The verse teaches that it is not wealth but righteousness that is inherited, and only good gained without cruelty endures in a lineage; that it is useless to instruct one who persists in evil, yet it remains the duty of the wise to bear witness to the truth to the end; and that a father must lead his sons, not be led by their folly toward common ruin.
