विदुर उवाच
आर्या पृथा राजपुत्री नारण्यं गन्तुम् अर्हति ॥
सुकुमारी च वृद्धा च नित्यं चैव सुखोचिता ॥
इह वत्स्यति कल्याणी सत्कृता मम वेश्मनि ॥
इति पार्था विजानीध्वम् अगदं वो ऽस्तु सर्वशः ॥
युधिष्ठिर विजानीहि ममेदं भरतर्षभ ॥
नाधर्मेण जितः कश् चिद् व्यथते वै पराजयात् ॥
त्वं वै धर्मान् विजानीषे युधां वेत्ता धनंजयः ॥
हन्तारीणां भीमसेनो नकुलस् त्व् अर्थसंग्रही ॥
संयन्ता सहदेवस् तु धौम्यो ब्रह्मविदुत्तमः ॥
धर्मार्थकुशला चैव द्रौपदी धर्मचारिणी ॥

āryā pṛthā rājaputrī nāraṇyaṃ gantum arhati ||
sukumārī ca vṛddhā ca nityaṃ caiva sukhocitā ||
iha vatsyati kalyāṇī satkṛtā mama veśmani ||
iti pārthā vijānīdhvam agadaṃ vo 'stu sarvaśaḥ ||
yudhiṣṭhira vijānīhi mamedaṃ bharatarṣabha ||
nādharmeṇa jitaḥ kaś cid vyathate vai parājayāt ||
tvaṃ vai dharmān vijānīṣe yudhāṃ vettā dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
hantārīṇāṃ bhīmaseno nakulas tv arthasaṃgrahī ||
saṃyantā sahadevas tu dhaumyo brahmaviduttamaḥ ||
dharmārthakuśalā caiva draupadī dharmacāriṇī ||
[Vidura:] 'The noble Pritha, daughter of a king, should not go into the forest: she is delicate, old, and always accustomed to comfort. Let the blessed one remain here, honored, in my house; know this, O Parthas; may you have well-being in everything. Understand, Yudhishthira, this word of mine, O bull among the Bharatas: no one defeated by unrighteousness grieves over such a defeat. You know the dharmas; Dhananjaya is the master of battles; Bhimasena is the slayer of foes; Nakula is the gatherer of wealth; Sahadeva is the administrator; Dhaumya is the foremost of those who know the Brahman; and Draupadi is skilled in dharma and artha, walking the path of dharma.'

Vidura utters a great consolation: ‘one defeated by unrighteousness does not grieve over defeat’ — for a loss through deceit is not a true defeat, and the shame falls on the deceiver, not the deceived. Thus the conscience of the righteous remains unharmed under the weight of an apparent defeat. In taking the aged Kunti into his own house, Vidura shows that care for the helpless stands above all politics: where power has abandoned its own, loyalty gathers up the forsaken. By listing the gifts of each Pandava, he strengthens them with the memory of their own strength. The verse teaches that what is wrongly taken away does not take away dignity; that true defeat lies only in the loss of dharma, not of a kingdom; and that within the house of those doing the banishing there is found one man whose righteousness will shelter the helpless whom they have rejected.
