वैशंपायन उवाच
तस्मिन् संप्रस्थिते कृष्णा पृथां प्राप्य यशस्विनीम् ॥
आपृच्छद् भृशदुःखार्ता याश् चान्यास् तत्र योषितः ॥
यथार्हं वन्दनाश्लेषान् कृत्वा गन्तुम् इयेष सा ॥
ततो निनादः सुमहान् पाण्डवान्तःपुरे ऽभवत् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tasmin saṃprasthite kṛṣṇā pṛthāṃ prāpya yaśasvinīm ||
āpṛcchad bhṛśaduḥkhārtā yāś cānyās tatra yoṣitaḥ ||
yathārhaṃ vandanāśleṣān kṛtvā gantum iyeṣa sā ||
tato ninādaḥ sumahān pāṇḍavāntaḥpure 'bhavat ||
When Yudhishthira set out, Krishna, coming to glorious Pritha, sorely afflicted with grief, took leave of her and of the other wives who were there. Having made bows and embraces as was fitting, she wished to go; and then a great wail arose in the inner chambers of the Pandavas.

Even in the bitterest hour of parting, Draupadi keeps the rite of honor -- bows and embraces to her elders: the dharma of courtesy is not set aside by misfortune. The wail of the inner chambers shows that the queen's humiliation wounded not her alone but the whole household, all the wives: where one pure soul suffers, an entire community of loving hearts grieves. It is telling that she takes leave first of Kunti -- the eldest, the mother of her husbands: even as she is driven into exile, she turns to the root of kinship. The verse teaches that nobility keeps its order of reverence even in sorrow; that the suffering of the righteous woman is felt as pain in every heart not corrupted by malice; and that a farewell performed with love is itself a consolation amid disaster.
