अवाप्य वसुसंपूर्णां वसुधां वसुधाधिप ॥
प्रव्राज्य पाण्डवान् राज्याद् राजन् किम् अनुशोचसि ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
अशोच्यं तु कुतस् तेषां येषां वैरं भविष्यति ॥
पाण्डवैर् युद्धशौण्डैर् हि मित्रवद्भिर् महारथैः ॥
संजय उवाच
तवेदं सुकृतं राजन् महद् वैरं भविष्यति ॥
विनाशः सर्वलोकस्य सानुबन्धो भविष्यति ॥

pravrājya pāṇḍavān rājyād rājan kim anuśocasi ||
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
aśocyaṃ tu kutas teṣāṃ yeṣāṃ vairaṃ bhaviṣyati ||
pāṇḍavair yuddhaśauṇḍair hi mitravadbhir mahārathaiḥ ||
saṃjaya uvāca
tavedaṃ sukṛtaṃ rājan mahad vairaṃ bhaviṣyati ||
vināśaḥ sarvalokasya sānubandho bhaviṣyati ||
[Sanjaya:] "Having obtained the earth full of treasures, O lord of the earth, having banished the Pandavas from the kingdom, O king — why do you grieve? And why should they not be an object of grief, those who will have enmity with the Pandavas — intoxicated with battle, rich in friends, great chariot-warriors? This 'good deed' of yours, O king, will turn into great enmity; and the destruction of the whole world, with all its consequences, will thereby come to pass."

Sanjaya turns supposed fortune into a verdict: what seemed a gain is the sowing of universal ruin. The bitter irony of the 'good deed' exposes the blindness that mistook a lawless victory for a blessing. Here a law is proclaimed: wrongful gain does not crown but destroys the one who gains it, for enmity born of injury is unquenchable. It is telling that a faithful counselor does not flatter but speaks the truth to one's face even after the deed is done — so that at least the recognition of truth may remain. The verse teaches that profit obtained through wrong is a hidden calamity; that to rejoice over victory against the offended is to rejoice in one's own coming destruction; and that a true friend does not console falsely, but lays bare the substance of what has been done, even when it is too late to undo it.
