पुरा सृष्टानि भूतानि पीड्यन्ते क्षुधया भृशम् ॥
ततो ऽनुकम्पया तेषां सविता स्वपिता इव ॥
गत्वोत्तरायणं तेजोरसान् उद्धृत्य रश्मिभिः ॥
दक्षिणायनम् आवृत्तो महीं निविशते रविः ॥
क्षेत्रभूते ततस् तस्मिन्न् ओषधीर् ओषधीपतिः ॥
दिवस् तेजः समुद्धृत्य जनयाम् आस वारिणा ॥
निषिक्तश् चन्द्रतेजोभिः सूयते भूगतो रविः ॥
ओषध्यः षड्रसा मेध्यास् तदन्नं प्राणिनां भुवि ॥
एवं भानुमयं ह्य् अन्नं भूतानां प्राणधारणम् ॥
पितैष सर्वभूतानां तस्मात् तं शरणं व्रज ॥
राजानो हि महात्मानो योनिकर्मविशोधिताः ॥
उद्धरन्ति प्रजाः सर्वास् तप आस्थाय पुष्कलम् ॥
भीमेन कार्तवीर्येण वैन्येन नहुषेण च ॥
तपोयोगसमाधिस्थैर् उद्धृता ह्य् आपदः प्रजाः ॥
तथा त्वम् अपि धर्मात्मन् कर्मणा च विशोधितः ॥
तप आस्थाय धर्मेण द्विजातीन् भर भारत ॥

tato 'nukampayā teṣāṃ savitā svapitā iva ||
gatvottarāyaṇaṃ tejorasān uddhṛtya raśmibhiḥ ||
dakṣiṇāyanam āvṛtto mahīṃ niviśate raviḥ ||
kṣetrabhūte tatas tasminn oṣadhīr oṣadhīpatiḥ ||
divas tejaḥ samuddhṛtya janayām āsa vāriṇā ||
niṣiktaś candratejobhiḥ sūyate bhūgato raviḥ ||
oṣadhyaḥ ṣaḍrasā medhyās tadannaṃ prāṇināṃ bhuvi ||
evaṃ bhānumayaṃ hy annaṃ bhūtānāṃ prāṇadhāraṇam ||
pitaiṣa sarvabhūtānāṃ tasmāt taṃ śaraṇaṃ vraja ||
rājāno hi mahātmāno yonikarmaviśodhitāḥ ||
uddharanti prajāḥ sarvās tapa āsthāya puṣkalam ||
bhīmena kārtavīryeṇa vainyena nahuṣeṇa ca ||
tapoyogasamādhisthair uddhṛtā hy āpadaḥ prajāḥ ||
tathā tvam api dharmātman karmaṇā ca viśodhitaḥ ||
tapa āsthāya dharmeṇa dvijātīn bhara bhārata ||
Dhaumya said: 'In ancient times, created beings suffered greatly from hunger; then Savitar, out of compassion for them, like a father, went along the northern path, drew out their essence and heat with his rays, and then, turning to the southern path, entered the earth. In that earth, having become a field, the lord of plants, taking the radiance of heaven, brought forth plants with water. Sprinkled with the moon's brilliance, pure plants of six flavors are born on earth; they are the food of living beings. Thus food, solar by nature, sustains the life of beings. The sun is the father of all beings; therefore go to him as your refuge. Great kings, purified by birth and by deed, raised up their peoples by establishing themselves in intense austerity. Bhima, Kartavirya, Vena, and Nahusha, abiding in austerity, yoga, and meditation, delivered their peoples from misfortune. So you too, O soul of dharma, purified by deed, establish yourself in austerity and, according to dharma, sustain the twice-born, O Bharata.'
