प्रत्यक्षम् हि त्वया दृष्टः ऋषिः गच्छन् महातपाः मार्कण्डेयः अप्रमेयात्मा धर्मेण चिरजीविताम्pratyakṣam hi tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ ṛṣiḥ gacchan mahātapāḥ mārkaṇḍeyaḥ aprameyātmā dharmeṇa cirajīvitāmyou yourself have seen with your own eyes the great ascetic sage Markandeya, of immeasurable soul, who attained long life through dharma
व्यासः वसिष्ठः मैत्रेयः नारदः लोमशः शुकः अन्ये च ऋषयः सिद्धाः धर्मेण एव सुचेतसःvyāsaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ maitreyaḥ nāradaḥ lomaśaḥ śukaḥ anye ca ṛṣayaḥ siddhāḥ dharmeṇa eva sucetasaḥVyasa, Vasishtha, Maitreya, Narada, Lomasha, Shuka, and other perfected sages, pure of mind, attained this precisely through dharma
प्रत्यक्षम् पश्यसि हि एतान् दिव्ययोगसमन्वितान् शापानुग्रहणे शक्तान् देवैः अपि गरीयसःpratyakṣam paśyasi hi etān divyayogasamanvitān śāpānugrahaṇe śaktān devaiḥ api garīyasaḥyou see them directly, endowed with divine yoga, capable of cursing and blessing, weightier even than the gods
एते हि धर्मम् एव आदौ वर्णयन्ति सदा मम कर्तव्यम् अमरप्रख्याः प्रत्यक्षागमबुद्धयःete hi dharmam eva ādau varṇayanti sadā mama kartavyam amaraprakhyāḥ pratyakṣāgamabuddhayaḥthey, comparable to the immortals, whose knowledge rests on direct perception and tradition, always teach me dharma first of all as one's duty
अतः न अर्हसि कल्याणि धातारम् धर्मम् एव च रजोमूढेन मनसा क्षेप्तुम् शङ्कितुम् एव चataḥ na arhasi kalyāṇi dhātāram dharmam eva ca rajomūḍhena manasā kṣeptum śaṅkitum eva catherefore, O gracious one, you should not, with a mind clouded by passion, revile the Ordainer and dharma, or doubt them
धर्मातिशङ्की न अन्यस्मिन् प्रमाणम् अधिगच्छति आत्मप्रमाणः उन्नद्धः श्रेयसः हि अवमन्यकःdharmātiśaṅkī na anyasmin pramāṇam adhigacchati ātmapramāṇaḥ unnaddhaḥ śreyasaḥ hi avamanyakaḥone who excessively doubts dharma accepts no other proof, being his own measure, arrogant, and contemptuous of the highest good
इन्द्रियप्रीतिसंबद्धम् यत् इदम् लोकसाक्षिकम् एतावान् मन्यते बालः मोहम् अन्यत्र गच्छतिindriyaprītisaṃbaddham yat idam lokasākṣikam etāvān manyate bālaḥ moham anyatra gacchatia child considers real only what is bound up with sensory pleasure and visible to the world, and elsewhere falls into delusion
प्रायश्चित्तम् न तस्य अस्ति यः धर्मम् अतिशङ्कते ध्यायन् स कृपणः पापः न लोकान् प्रतिपद्यतेprāyaścittam na tasya asti yaḥ dharmam atiśaṅkate dhyāyan sa kṛpaṇaḥ pāpaḥ na lokān pratipadyatethere is no atonement for one who excessively doubts dharma; such a wretched sinner, thinking thus, does not attain the worlds
प्रमाणानि अतिवृत्तः हि वेदशास्त्रार्थनिन्दकः कामलोभानुगः मूढः नरकम् प्रतिपद्यतेpramāṇāni ativṛttaḥ hi vedaśāstrārthanindakaḥ kāmalobhānugaḥ mūḍhaḥ narakam pratipadyateone who has gone beyond the sources of knowledge, a reviler of the meaning of the Veda and shastras, a fool following desire and greed, attains hell
यः तु नित्यम् कृतमतिः धर्मम् एव अभिपद्यते अशङ्कमानः कल्याणि सः अमुत्र आनन्त्यम् अश्नुतेyaḥ tu nityam kṛtamatiḥ dharmam eva abhipadyate aśaṅkamānaḥ kalyāṇi saḥ amutra ānantyam aśnutebut he who with a firm mind always follows dharma without doubting, O gracious one, enjoys the infinite hereafter
आर्षम् प्रमाणम् उत्क्रम्य धर्मान् अपरिपालयन् सर्वशास्त्रातिगः मूढः शम् जन्मसु न विन्दतिārṣam pramāṇam utkramya dharmān aparipālayan sarvaśāstrātigaḥ mūḍhaḥ śam janmasu na vindatihaving transgressed the proof of the sages and not upholding the dharmas, a fool who transgresses all the shastras finds no good in his births
