Yudhishthira said before all the heroes, Dhrishtadyumna and the rest: 'I accept your true word, Janardana: you will slay my enemies together with their allies. But let my own word be made true after thirteen years, Keshava, for I have promised the kings to live in the forest.' Hearing the word of the king of dharma, the gathered heroes led by Dhrishtadyumna swiftly soothed Madhusudana with sweet and well-timed words. They said to the blameless Panchali, while Vasudeva listened: 'Duryodhana, goddess, shall lose his life on account of your wrath. We promise you truly: grieve not, O fair one. Those who laughed on seeing you enraged will become food for beasts and birds; vultures and jackals will drink the blood of those who dragged you by the hair into the hall, pulling you along by your head. You will see their bodies on the ground, Panchali, torn again and again by flesh-eating beasts and devoured. Those by whom you were tormented there, and by whom you were left unaided -- the earth will drink the blood of their severed heads.' So spoke these bulls among men, in many such words, all radiant and heroic, all bearing marks of unbeaten valor. After the thirteenth year has passed, chosen by the king of dharma, these great chariot-warriors will advance, setting Vasudeva at their head: Rama, Krishna, Dhananjaya, Pradyumna, Samba, Yuyudhana, Bhima, the sons of Madri, the sons of the Kekaya king, and the sons of Panchala together with the king of dharma. These world-heroes, unconquerable, great of soul, together with their kinsmen and armies -- who, wishing to live, would come forth against them in battle, any more than one would face enraged, maned lions?'

Yudhishthira restrains even Krishna's righteous anger within the bounds of the vow. Here dharma does not cancel retribution, but requires that it come at its appointed time.
