भीष्मद्रोणाव् अतिरथौ कृपो द्रौणिश् च दुर्जयः ॥
धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रेण वृता युधि महाबलाः ॥
सर्वे वेदविदः शूराः सर्वे ऽस्त्रकुशलास् तथा ॥
योद्धुकामश् च पार्थेन सततं यो महाबलः ॥
स च दिव्यास्त्रवित् कर्णः सूतपुत्रो महारथः ॥
सो ऽश्ववेगानिलबलः शरार्चिस् तलनिस्वनः ॥
रजोधूमो ऽस्त्रसंतापो धार्तराष्ट्रानिलोद्धतः ॥
निसृष्ट इव कालेन युगान्तज्वलनो यथा ॥
मम सैन्यमयं कक्षं प्रधक्ष्यति न संशयः ॥
तं स कृष्णानिलोद्धूतो दिव्यास्त्रजलदो महान् ॥
श्वेतवाजिबलाकाभृद् गाण्डीवेन्द्रायुधोज्ज्वलः ॥
सततं शरधाराभिः प्रदीप्तं कर्णपावकम् ॥
उदीर्णो ऽर्जुनमेघो ऽयं शमयिष्यति संयुगे ॥
स साक्षाद् एव सर्वाणि शक्रात् परपुरंजयः ॥
दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राणि बीभत्सुस् तत्त्वतः प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥
अलं स तेषां सर्वेषाम् इति मे धीयते मतिः ॥
नास्ति त्व् अतिक्रिया तस्य रणे ऽरीणां प्रतिक्रिया ॥
तं वयं पाण्डवं सर्वे गृहीतास्त्रं धनंजयम् ॥
द्रष्टारो न हि बीभत्सुर् भारम् उद्यम्य सीदति ॥

Traducción

'On the side of Dhritarashtra's son stand Bhishma and Drona, great chariot-warriors, Kripa and the invincible son of Drona; all of them are mighty, learned in the Veda, valiant, and skilled in arms. And there is also Karna, son of a charioteer, a great warrior, ever eager to fight with Partha and versed in divine weapons. He is like the fire at the end of an age: the speed of his horses is the wind, his arrows are tongues of flame, the twang of his bowstring is the crackle of fire, the dust is smoke, and the wind that fans it is the sons of Dhritarashtra. He will burn my army as dry forest burns. But the great cloud that is Arjuna, driven by the wind of Krishna, with white horses like cranes and the shining Gandiva like Indra's rainbow, will quench the blazing fire of Karna with streams of arrows. Bibhatsu will receive from Shakra all the divine weapons in their true essence. I think he alone is a match for them all; in battle there is no move of the enemy for which he will not find an answer. We shall see Dhananjaya with weapons in hand; Bibhatsu will not falter, having taken up his burden.'

Comentario

The image of Karna as fire and Arjuna as a rain cloud is not mere martial poetry. It shows that destructive power will be checked by a power united with Krishna.
