Lopamudra said: 'Blessed one, you have fulfilled all that I desired. Now grant me a son, just once, surpassing others in strength.' Agastya said: 'I am pleased with your conduct, lovely one. But concerning offspring I shall give you a choice; listen. Let there be a thousand sons for you, or a hundred equal to ten; or ten equal to a hundred; or one equal to a thousand.' Lopamudra said: 'Let there be for me one son, equal to a thousand, O ascetic. One who is learned and good is better than many who are not good.' Saying 'so be it,' the sage united with her at the proper time — with one equal in disposition, full of faith and trust. Having conceived this child, he went once more into the forest. While he was in the forest, the child grew for seven autumns. When the seventh year had passed, the great poet was born, blazing with power, named Dridhasyu; he was already reciting the Vedas together with their limbs and the Upanishads. He became a great, radiant sage, son of that sage; even as a child, in his father's dwelling, he carried loads of firewood, and so was named Idhmavaha. Seeing him thus, the sage rejoiced, and his ancestors obtained the worlds they desired. Thus is known the ashram of Agastya, filled with the flowers of every season; thus was the evil-hearted killer of brahmins, Vatapi, descendant of Prahlada, destroyed by Agastya. This, O king, is his ashram, delightful and endowed with virtues. And here is the sacred Bhagirathi — enter it as you wish.'

Lopamudra's choice is remarkably precise: quality over quantity. The dharma of the lineage is fulfilled not by a multitude of descendants, but by a single worthy bearer of knowledge and character.
