एवं प्रक्षीयमाणाश् च मानवा मनुजेश्वर ॥
आत्मत्राणपरा भीताः प्राद्रवन्त दिशो भयात् ॥
के चिद् गुहाः प्रविविशुर् निर्झरांश् चापरे श्रिताः ॥
अपरे मरणोद्विग्ना भयात् प्रानान् समुत्सृजन् ॥
के चिद् अत्र महेष्वासाः शूराः परमदर्पिताः ॥
मार्गमाणाः परं यत्नं दानवानां प्रचक्रिरे ॥
न चैतान् अधिजग्मुस् ते समुद्रं समुपाश्रितान् ॥
श्रमं जग्मुश् च परमम् आजग्मुः क्षयम् एव च ॥
जगत्य् उपशमं याते नष्टयज्ञोत्सवक्रिये ॥
आजग्मुः परमाम् आर्तिं त्रिदशा मनुजेश्वर ॥
समेत्य समहेन्द्राश् च भयान् मन्त्रं प्रचक्रिरे ॥
नारायणं पुरस्कृत्य वैकुण्ठम् अपराजितम् ॥

ātmatrāṇaparā bhītāḥ prādravanta diśo bhayāt ||
ke cid guhāḥ praviviśur nirjharāṃś cāpare śritāḥ ||
apare maraṇodvignā bhayāt prānān samutsṛjan ||
ke cid atra maheṣvāsāḥ śūrāḥ paramadarpitāḥ ||
mārgamāṇāḥ paraṃ yatnaṃ dānavānāṃ pracakrire ||
na caitān adhijagmus te samudraṃ samupāśritān ||
śramaṃ jagmuś ca paramam ājagmuḥ kṣayam eva ca ||
jagaty upaśamaṃ yāte naṣṭayajñotsavakriye ||
ājagmuḥ paramām ārtiṃ tridaśā manujeśvara ||
sametya samahendrāś ca bhayān mantraṃ pracakrire ||
nārāyaṇaṃ puraskṛtya vaikuṇṭham aparājitam ||
Thus, lord of men, the people, being diminished, terrified and concerned only with saving themselves, fled in every direction. Some entered caves, others took shelter by waterfalls; some, shaken by the nearness of death, gave up their lives from fear. There were also great archers there, brave and full of pride: with the utmost effort they sought a way to the danavas. But they did not find them, hidden in the ocean; they achieved only utter exhaustion and death. When the world had grown still, when the sacrificial festivals and rites had been destroyed, the thirty gods, O lord of men, fell into extreme distress. Gathering together with Indra, they began, in fear, to take counsel, placing Narayana, the unconquerable Vaikuntha, at their head.'

Human strength cannot reach an enemy hidden in the depths. That is why the gods turn to Narayana: when the root of the calamity is invisible, a higher protection is needed.
