Lomasha said: 'At this same time, the friend of Dasharatha was Lomapada, known as the lord of the Angas. According to tradition, he gave the brahmins a false promise; then this lord of the earth was abandoned by the brahmins. Because of the king's offense against the priest, the Thousand-eyed One withheld rain, and the people began to suffer. Then the lord of the earth asked the ascetic brahmins, wise and capable of bringing rain from the lord of the gods: "How can Parjanya be made to send rain? Let a means be found." At his request, the wise men offered their opinions. One, the best of the sages, said to the king: "The brahmins are angry with you, O king. Perform an atonement. And bring, O lord, the sage's son Rishyashringa -- a man of the forest, unacquainted with women, devoted to uprightness. If this great ascetic enters your domain, O king, rain will fall at once: of this I have no doubt." Hearing these words, the king performed atonement for himself. When the twice-born were satisfied and he returned, the people, seeing the king come back, received him again. Then the lord of the Angas summoned his counselors, skilled in counsel, and began to seek a way to bring Rishyashringa. With these blameless ministers, learned in the shastras, well versed in affairs, and firm in policy, he found a means. Then the king had the finest courtesans brought, women skilled in everything, and said to them: "Bring the sage's son Rishyashringa here by guile: entice him, win his trust, and lead him into my splendid kingdom." These women, frightened by fear of the king and fear of a curse, turned pale, lost heart, and said that the task was impossible. But one old woman said to the king: "Great king, I will try to bring this man rich in austerity. Grant me whatever I judge necessary; then I shall be able to entice Rishyashringa, the sage's son." The king agreed to her whole plan and gave her much wealth and various jewels. Then she took with her several women, lovely in beauty and youth, and went straight into the forest.'

The drought in the land of the Angas is bound up with the breaking of a promise to the brahmins: nature answers the moral disorder of the kingdom. But the chosen means of deliverance already contains a tension within it: Rishyashringa's purity is to be drawn in by guile.
