the mountain, through the mouths of its caves, let out the sound of his tail on every side, as a cow lets out a bellow; the sound of his tail, resembling the roar of a rutting elephant, passed along the slopes; Bhima, hearing it, with his hair standing on end, began to search for the source of the sound and walked through the banana forest; on a stone slab he saw the lord of monkeys: hard to look upon like a mass of lightning, tawny as lightning, resembling lightning, with his arms crossed, a powerful neck and a short head, a body broad at the shoulders and slender at the waist, a long-haired tail raised like a banner, red lips, a copper tongue, red ears, restless eyebrows, a moon-like face with fangs, white teeth, a mane like a heap of ashoka blossoms, standing amid golden banana trees, blazing like fire, looking about fearlessly with honey-tawny eyes; Bhima approached and let out a lion's roar, wishing to wake the monkey; the beasts and birds took fright, and Hanuman, opening his eyes slightly, looked at him with contempt and, smiling, asked why Bhima had so painfully woken him from his peaceful sleep; one who knows should show compassion to living beings, while they, born as animals, do not know dharma; how can reasoning men become attached to cruel deeds that defile body, speech and mind and destroy dharma; Bhima does not know dharma and has not served his elders, since out of poor judgment he destroys the forest beasts; let him say who he is and why he has come to this forest, devoid of human ways; beyond this the mountain is inaccessible, and without the power of the siddhas there is no way through; out of compassion and friendship Hanuman restrains him, for he cannot go further; let him eat these roots and fruits, like nectar, and turn back, if he will accept this counsel.

Hearing this sound, like the crash of the thunderbolt, the lions sleeping in the mountain caves let out a great roar. Terrified by the lions' roar, the elephants too let out a tremendous cry, which filled the mountain. Hearing this noise, the sleeping great lord of monkeys, the monkey named Hanuman, yawned. Then, lying in the banana grove and overcome by sleep, he yawned and struck the ground with his huge tail, raised like the banner of Shakra, and the sound was like the thunder of Indra. The mountain, through the mouths of its caves, let out the sound of his tail on every side, as a cow lets out a bellow. This sound of his tail, resembling the roar of a rutting elephant, passed along the various mountain slopes. Bhimasena, hearing it, with his hair joyfully standing on end, began to search for the source of the sound and walked through the banana forest. Then the mighty-armed one saw, on a broad stone slab, the lord of monkeys standing amid the banana forest: hard to look upon, like a mass of lightning; tawny, like a mass of lightning; resembling lightning and quick-moving, like lightning; with a powerful short neck, upon which the arms lay crossed; with a body broad at the shoulders and slender at the waist; with a head slightly bowed and a long-haired tail rising upward and shining like a banner; with red lips, a copper tongue, red ears and restless eyebrows; with a face where the rounded tips of his fangs shone like a radiant moon; adorned within by gleaming white teeth mingled with his mane, like a heap of ashoka blossoms; standing amid golden banana trees, greatly radiant, blazing with his own body like flaming fire; looking about fearlessly with honey-tawny eyes. Then Bhima, terrible in valor, quickly approached and let out a lion's roar, wishing to wake the monkey. At this sound of Bhima's the beasts and birds took fright; and the mighty Hanuman opened his eyes slightly and looked at him with contempt through his honey-tawny eyes. Smiling, the monkey addressed the son of Kunti: "Why have you so painfully woken me, who was sleeping peacefully? Should not you, who know, show compassion to living beings? We, who have taken birth as animals, do not know dharma. Human beings are endowed with reason and show compassion to living creatures. How, then, can reasoning men such as you become attached to cruel deeds that defile body, speech and mind and destroy dharma? You do not know dharma, you have not served your elders: out of poor judgment you destroy the forest beasts. Tell me, who are you, and why have you come to this forest, devoid of human ways and even of men? Beyond this the mountain is inaccessible and very hard to climb; without the power of the siddhas, hero, there is no way through here. Out of compassion and friendship I restrain you, mighty one. You cannot go beyond this point; be at ease, lord. Here are roots and fruits, like nectar. Eat them and turn back, if you will accept my word."
