अर्जुन उवाच
ततो ऽश्मवर्षं सुमहत् प्रादुरासीत् समन्ततः ॥
नगमात्रैर् महाघोरैस् तन् मां दृढम् अपीडयत् ॥
तद् अहं वज्रसंकाशैः शरैर् इन्द्रास्त्रचोदितैः ॥
अचूर्णयं वेगवद्भिः शतधैकैकम् आहवे ॥
चूर्ण्यमाने ऽश्मवर्षे तु पावकः समजायत ॥
तत्राश्मचूर्णम् अपतत् पावकप्रकरा इव ॥
ततो ऽश्मवर्षे निहते जलवर्षं महत्तरम् ॥
धाराभिर् अक्षमात्राभिः प्रादुरासीन् ममान्तिके ॥
नभसः प्रच्युता धारास् तिग्मवीर्याः सहस्रशः ॥
आवृण्वन् सर्वतो व्योम दिशश् चोपदिशस् तथा ॥
धाराणां च निपातेन वायोर् विस्फूर्जितेन च ॥
गर्जितेन च दैत्यानां न प्राज्ञायत किं चन ॥
धारा दिवि च संबद्धा वसुधायां च सर्वशः ॥
व्यामोहयन्त मां तत्र निपतन्त्यो ऽनिशं भुवि ॥
तत्रोपदिष्टम् इन्द्रेण दिव्यम् अस्त्रं विशोषणम् ॥
दीप्तं प्राहिणवं घोरम् अशुष्यत् तेन तज् जलम् ॥
हते ऽश्मवर्षे तु मया जलवर्षे च शोषिते ॥
मुमुचुर् दानवा मायाम् अग्निं वायुं च मानद ॥
ततो ऽहम् अग्निं व्यधमं सलिलास्त्रेण सर्वशः ॥
शैलेन च महास्त्रेण वायोर् वेगम् अधारयम् ॥

tato 'śmavarṣaṃ sumahat prādurāsīt samantataḥ ||
nagamātrair mahāghorais tan māṃ dṛḍham apīḍayat ||
tad ahaṃ vajrasaṃkāśaiḥ śarair indrāstracoditaiḥ ||
acūrṇayaṃ vegavadbhiḥ śatadhaikaikam āhave ||
cūrṇyamāne 'śmavarṣe tu pāvakaḥ samajāyata ||
tatrāśmacūrṇam apatat pāvakaprakarā iva ||
tato 'śmavarṣe nihate jalavarṣaṃ mahattaram ||
dhārābhir akṣamātrābhiḥ prādurāsīn mamāntike ||
nabhasaḥ pracyutā dhārās tigmavīryāḥ sahasraśaḥ ||
āvṛṇvan sarvato vyoma diśaś copadiśas tathā ||
dhārāṇāṃ ca nipātena vāyor visphūrjitena ca ||
garjitena ca daityānāṃ na prājñāyata kiṃ cana ||
dhārā divi ca saṃbaddhā vasudhāyāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ||
vyāmohayanta māṃ tatra nipatantyo 'niśaṃ bhuvi ||
tatropadiṣṭam indreṇa divyam astraṃ viśoṣaṇam ||
dīptaṃ prāhiṇavaṃ ghoram aśuṣyat tena taj jalam ||
hate 'śmavarṣe tu mayā jalavarṣe ca śoṣite ||
mumucur dānavā māyām agniṃ vāyuṃ ca mānada ||
tato 'ham agniṃ vyadhamaṃ salilāstreṇa sarvaśaḥ ||
śailena ca mahāstreṇa vāyor vegam adhārayam ||
Arjuna said: "Then a great stone-rain arose on every side: terrible boulders the size of a mountain struck against me with great force. With swift arrows like thunderbolts, driven by the Indra-astra, I shattered each one into a hundred pieces in that battle. When the stone-rain was broken, fire arose, and the stone-dust fell like scattered flames. After the stones were destroyed, an even greater rain of water appeared: thousands of streams as thick as chariot-axles fell from the sky and covered the whole expanse, the directions and the intermediate directions. From the falling of the streams, the roar of the wind, and the bellowing of the daityas, nothing could be discerned. The streams hung joined in the sky and fell upon the earth on every side, ceaselessly bewildering me. Then I released the divine desiccating astra taught by Indra, blazing and terrible; by that astra the water dried up. When the stone-rain was destroyed and the water-rain dried, the danavas released the maya of fire and wind. I completely quenched the fire with the water-astra, and with the great mountain-astra I checked the force of the wind."

The maya of the danavas works through the elements -- stone, fire, water, wind. Arjuna answers not with brute force but with knowledge of correspondences, where a fitting counter is found for every threat.
