ततो मां प्रहसन् राजन् मातलिः प्रत्यभाषत ॥
नैतद् अर्जुन देवेषु त्वयि वीर्यं यदीक्ष्यते ॥
हतेष्व् असुरसंघेषु दारास् तेषां तु सर्वशः ॥
प्राक्रोशन् नगरे तस्मिन् यथा शरदि लक्ष्मणाः ॥
ततो मातलिना सार्धम् अहं तत् पुरम् अभ्ययाम् ॥
त्रासयन् रथघोषेण निवातकवचस्त्रियः ॥
तान् दृष्ट्वा दशसाहस्रान् मयूरसदृशान् हयान् ॥
रथं च रविसंकाशं प्राद्रवन् गणशः स्त्रियः ॥
ताभिर् आभरणैः शब्दस् त्रासिताभिः समीरितः ॥
शिलानाम् इव शैलेषु पतन्तीनाम् अभूत् तदा ॥
वित्रस्ता दैत्यनार्यस् ताः स्वानि वेश्मान्य् अथाविशन् ॥
बहुरत्नविचित्राणि शातकुम्भमयानि च ॥
तद् अद्भुताकारम् अहं दृष्ट्वा नगरम् उत्तमम् ॥
विशिष्टं देवनगराद् अपृच्छं मातलिं ततः ॥
इदम् एवंविधं कस्माद् देवता नाविशन्त्य् उत ॥
पुरंदरपुराद् धीदं विशिष्टम् इति लक्षये ॥
tato māṃ prahasan rājan mātaliḥ pratyabhāṣata ||
naitad arjuna deveṣu tvayi vīryaṃ yadīkṣyate ||
hateṣv asurasaṃgheṣu dārās teṣāṃ tu sarvaśaḥ ||
prākrośan nagare tasmin yathā śaradi lakṣmaṇāḥ ||
tato mātalinā sārdham ahaṃ tat puram abhyayām ||
trāsayan rathaghoṣeṇa nivātakavacastriyaḥ ||
tān dṛṣṭvā daśasāhasrān mayūrasadṛśān hayān ||
rathaṃ ca ravisaṃkāśaṃ prādravan gaṇaśaḥ striyaḥ ||
tābhir ābharaṇaiḥ śabdas trāsitābhiḥ samīritaḥ ||
śilānām iva śaileṣu patantīnām abhūt tadā ||
vitrastā daityanāryas tāḥ svāni veśmāny athāviśan ||
bahuratnavicitrāṇi śātakumbhamayāni ca ||
tad adbhutākāram ahaṃ dṛṣṭvā nagaram uttamam ||
viśiṣṭaṃ devanagarād apṛcchaṃ mātaliṃ tataḥ ||
idam evaṃvidhaṃ kasmād devatā nāviśanty uta ||
puraṃdarapurād dhīdaṃ viśiṣṭam iti lakṣaye ||
Then Mātali, laughing, said to me: 'Arjuna, such valor as is seen in you is not found even among the gods.' When the hosts of asuras had been slain, their wives cried out in that city like birds in autumn. Then, together with Mātali, I approached that city, frightening the wives of the Nivātakavacas with the roar of the chariot. Seeing ten thousand horses resembling peacocks, and a chariot shining like the sun, the women fled in groups. The sound of their ornaments, raised by fear, was then like the crash of rocks falling on mountain slopes. The frightened wives of the daityas entered their own houses, richly adorned with many jewels and made of gold. Having seen that wondrous and excellent city, I asked Mātali: 'Why do the gods not enter such a place? It seems to me that this city surpasses the city of Purandara.'

After the victory Arjuna sees not only the trophy but also the weeping of the women. The narrative keeps its sobriety: even a righteous war leaves behind the grief of the defeated.
