स ददर्श महाकायं भुजङ्गं लोमहर्षणम् ॥
गिरिदुर्गे समापन्नं कायेनावृत्य कन्दरम् ॥
पर्वताभोगवर्ष्माणं भोगैश् चन्द्रार्कमण्डलैः ॥
चित्राङ्गम् अजिनैश् चित्रैर् हरिद्रासदृशच्छविम् ॥
गुहाकारेण वक्त्रेण चतुर्दंष्ट्रेण राजता ॥
दीप्ताक्षेणातिताम्रेण लिहन्तं सृक्किणी मुहुः ॥
त्रासनं सर्वभूतानां कालान्तकयमोपमम् ॥
निःश्वासक्ष्वेडनादेन भर्त्सयन्तम् इव स्थितम् ॥
स भीमं सहसाभ्येत्य पृदाकुः क्षुधितो भृशम् ॥
जग्राहाजगरो ग्राहो भुजयोर् उभयोर् बलात् ॥
तेन संस्पृष्टमात्रस्य भिमसेनस्य वै तदा ॥
संज्ञा मुमोह सहसा वरदानेन तस्य ह ॥
दश नागसहस्राणि धारयन्ति हि यद् बलम् ॥
तद् बलं भीमसेनस्य भुजयोर् असमं परैः ॥
स तेजस्वी तथा तेन भुजगेन वशीकृतः ॥
विस्फुरञ् शनकैर् भीमो न शशाक विचेष्टितुम् ॥
नागायुतसमप्राणः सिंहस्कन्धो महाभुजः ॥
गृहीतो व्यजहात् सत्त्वं वरदानेन मोहितः ॥
स हि प्रयत्नम् अकरोत् तीव्रम् आत्मविमोक्षणे ॥
न चैनम् अशकद् वीरः कथं चित् प्रतिबाधितुम् ॥

dīptākṣeṇātitāmreṇa lihantaṃ sṛkkiṇī muhuḥ ||
trāsanaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ kālāntakayamopamam ||
niḥśvāsakṣveḍanādena bhartsayantam iva sthitam ||
sa bhīmaṃ sahasābhyetya pṛdākuḥ kṣudhito bhṛśam ||
jagrāhājagaro grāho bhujayor ubhayor balāt ||
tena saṃspṛṣṭamātrasya bhimasenasya vai tadā ||
saṃjñā mumoha sahasā varadānena tasya ha ||
daśa nāgasahasrāṇi dhārayanti hi yad balam ||
tad balaṃ bhīmasenasya bhujayor asamaṃ paraiḥ ||
sa tejasvī tathā tena bhujagena vaśīkṛtaḥ ||
visphurañ śanakair bhīmo na śaśāka viceṣṭitum ||
nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ siṃhaskandho mahābhujaḥ ||
gṛhīto vyajahāt sattvaṃ varadānena mohitaḥ ||
sa hi prayatnam akarot tīvram ātmavimokṣaṇe ||
na cainam aśakad vīraḥ kathaṃ cit pratibādhitum ||
"He saw a huge serpent, at the sight of which the hair stood on end: it lay in a mountain defile, its body covering a cave. Its body was like a mountain slope; its coils were like the discs of the moon and sun; its markings were varied, and its color yellow like turmeric. Its mouth was like a cave, with four white fangs; its eyes blazed copper-red, and again and again it licked its lips. It stood as a terror to all beings, resembling Time itself at the end, and Yama, as though threatening with its breath and hiss. The famished python suddenly rushed upon Bhima and by force seized both his arms. At that very touch, by the power of its boon, Bhimasena's consciousness suddenly grew dim. The strength in Bhima's arms was such as ten thousand nagas together hold, unequaled by any other's. Yet the radiant Bhima, subdued by that serpent, only twitched feebly and could not move. Mighty, lion-shouldered, great-armed, equal in strength to ten thousand nagas, seized and dazed by the boon, he lost his fortitude. He made a fierce effort to free himself, but the hero could in no way withstand it."

The serpent overcomes Bhima not through greater muscular strength but through the power of a boon and of fate. Thus the epic sharply distinguishes the valor of the body from the power of karma.
