Vaishampayana said: "While they dwelt there, the season of rains arrived, ending the heat and bringing joy to all beings. Black clouds, thundering greatly, covered the sky and the quarters, and then poured down rain unceasingly day and night. Hundreds and thousands of the dwellings of summer heat vanished; the sun's radiance was hidden, and lightning flashed with pure light. The earth, drenched with water, grew thick with sprung-up grass, teemed with intoxicated insects and reptiles, and became calm, free of smoke, dust, and redness. When everything was covered with water, one could no longer tell level ground from uneven, nor rivers from fixed objects. The agitated, roaring rivers, swift as if breathing, adorned the forests once the heat had passed. In the forest regions were heard the varied voices of boars, beasts, and birds struck by the rains. The cataka birds, peacocks, flocks of male cuckoos, and proud frogs rushed about intoxicated with joy. Thus the manifold rainy season, resounding with clouds, passed for them auspiciously, as they wandered through Marudhanva."
