Janamejaya said: "While the great Parthas dwelt in that forest, what did the mighty archers, the sons of Dhritarashtra, do -- Karna Vaikartana, mighty Shakuni, Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa? Tell me this." Vaishampayana said: "Matters standing thus with the Parthas, when Suyodhana, freed by the sons of Pandu, returned to Hastinapura, Bhishma spoke these words to the son of Dhritarashtra: 'Son, I told you before, when you set out for the penance-forest, that your expedition did not please me, but you did not act as I wished. Therefore, hero, you were seized by force by your enemies and freed by the righteous Pandavas, and yet you feel no shame. Before your own eyes, son of Gandhari, before the eyes of your army, while you cried out, the charioteer's son fled the battle with the Gandharvas in fear. You have seen the valor of the great Pandavas and the valor of the evil-minded charioteer's son, Karna. Karna, best of kings, is not equal to even a quarter of the Pandavas in archery, in courage, or in dharma. Therefore, best knower of alliances, I consider it beneficial for you to make peace with these great Pandavas, for the growth of this lineage.' Thus spoke Bhishma, but the lord of men, the son of Dhritarashtra, suddenly laughed and departed together with Saubala. Learning that he was leaving, Karna, Duhshasana, and the other mighty archers followed the powerful son of Dhritarashtra. Seeing them depart, Bhishma, grandfather of the Kurus, ashamed and abashed, returned to his own house. When Bhishma had gone, the lord of men, the son of Dhritarashtra, came again to that place and took counsel with his ministers: 'What would be best for us? What task remains? How may good be done?'"

Bhishma speaks plainly: the experience of defeat should have led to peace. But Duryodhana's laughter shows that the lesson was not accepted.
