वैशंपायन उवाच
तस्मिन् बहुमृगे ऽरण्ये रममाणा महारथाः ॥
काम्यके भरतश्रेष्ठा विजह्रुस् ते यथामराः ॥
प्रेक्षमाणा बहुविधान् वनोद्देशान् समन्ततः ॥
यथर्तुकालरम्याश् च वनराजीः सुपुष्पिताः ॥
पाण्डवा मृगयाशीलाश् चरन्तस् तन् महावनम् ॥
विजह्रुर् इन्द्रप्रतिमाः कं चित् कालम् अरिंदमाः ॥
ततस् ते यौगपद्येन ययुः सर्वे चतुर्दिशम् ॥
मृगयां पुरुषव्याघ्रा ब्राह्मणार्थे परंतपाः ॥
द्रौपदीम् आश्रमे न्यस्य तृणबिन्दोर् अनुज्ञया ॥
महर्षेर् दीप्ततपसो धौम्यस्य च पुरोधसः ॥

kāmyake bharataśreṣṭhā vijahrus te yathāmarāḥ ||
prekṣamāṇā bahuvidhān vanoddeśān samantataḥ ||
yathartukālaramyāś ca vanarājīḥ supuṣpitāḥ ||
pāṇḍavā mṛgayāśīlāś carantas tan mahāvanam ||
vijahrur indrapratimāḥ kaṃ cit kālam ariṃdamāḥ ||
tatas te yaugapadyena yayuḥ sarve caturdiśam ||
mṛgayāṃ puruṣavyāghrā brāhmaṇārthe paraṃtapāḥ ||
draupadīm āśrame nyasya tṛṇabindor anujñayā ||
maharṣer dīptatapaso dhaumyasya ca purodhasaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: 'In this forest of Kamyaka, rich in wild beasts, the great charioteers, the best of the Bharatas, rejoiced like immortals. They gazed all around at the varied regions of the forest and at the groves in flower, beautiful with the season. The Pandavas, like Indra, fond of the hunt, wandered for a time through that great forest, these quellers of foes. Then these tigers among men, these quellers of foes, all set out together in the four directions to hunt for the sake of the brahmins. They left Draupadi in the hermitage with the permission of Trinabindu and in the care of the great sage Dhaumya, their purohita, blazing with austerity.'

Here the hunt is bound up not with pleasure but with sustaining the brahmins in the forest. But Draupadi, left behind, becomes the center of a new trial.
