अर्जुन उवाच
प्रतिज्ञां षण्ढको ऽस्मीति करिष्यामि महीपते ॥
ज्याघातौ हि महान्तौ मे संवर्तुं नृप दुष्करौ ॥
कर्णयोः प्रतिमुच्याहं कुण्डले ज्वलनोपमे ॥
वेणीकृतशिरा राजन् नाम्ना चैव बृहन्नडा ॥
पठन्न् आख्यायिकां नाम स्त्रीभावेन पुनः पुनः ॥
रमयिष्ये महीपालम् अन्यांश् चान्तःपुरे जनान् ॥
गीतं नृत्तं विचित्रं च वादित्रं विविधं तथा ॥
शिक्षयिष्याम्य् अहं राजन् विराटभवने स्त्रियः ॥
प्रजानां समुदाचारं बहु कर्मकृतं वदन् ॥
छादयिष्यामि कौन्तेय माययात्मानम् आत्मना ॥
युधिष्ठिरस्य गेहे ऽस्मि द्रौपद्याः परिचारिका ॥
उषितास्मीति वक्ष्यामि पृष्टो राज्ञा च भारत ॥
एतेन विधिना छन्नः कृतकेन यथा नलः ॥
विहरिष्यामि राजेन्द्र विराटभवने सुखम् ॥

pratijñāṃ ṣaṇḍhako 'smīti kariṣyāmi mahīpate ||
jyāghātau hi mahāntau me saṃvartuṃ nṛpa duṣkarau ||
karṇayoḥ pratimucyāhaṃ kuṇḍale jvalanopame ||
veṇīkṛtaśirā rājan nāmnā caiva bṛhannaḍā ||
paṭhann ākhyāyikāṃ nāma strībhāvena punaḥ punaḥ ||
ramayiṣye mahīpālam anyāṃś cāntaḥpure janān ||
gītaṃ nṛttaṃ vicitraṃ ca vāditraṃ vividhaṃ tathā ||
śikṣayiṣyāmy ahaṃ rājan virāṭabhavane striyaḥ ||
prajānāṃ samudācāraṃ bahu karmakṛtaṃ vadan ||
chādayiṣyāmi kaunteya māyayātmānam ātmanā ||
yudhiṣṭhirasya gehe 'smi draupadyāḥ paricārikā ||
uṣitāsmīti vakṣyāmi pṛṣṭo rājñā ca bhārata ||
etena vidhinā channaḥ kṛtakena yathā nalaḥ ||
vihariṣyāmi rājendra virāṭabhavane sukham ||
Arjuna said: 'I will make this vow: "I am a eunuch," o lord of the earth, for the great scars left by the bowstring on my arms are hard to hide. I will fasten in my ears earrings like flame, braid my hair, o king, and be called Brihannada. Taking again and again the form of a woman, I will recite tales and entertain the king and the people of the inner chambers. I will teach the women in Virata's household singing, dancing, varied performance, and diverse instruments. Speaking of the many customs of people and the deeds I have done, I will conceal myself by my own maya. If the king asks, I will say: "I lived in Yudhishthira's house as a maidservant of Draupadi." Thus, hidden by this contrived guise, like Nala, I will live happily in the house of Virata.'
