ताम् उपारुह्य नकुलो धनूंषि निदधत् स्वयम् ॥
यानि तस्यावकाशानि दृढरूपाण्य् अमन्यत ॥
यत्र चापश्यत स वै तिरो वर्षाणि वर्षति ॥
तत्र तानि दृढैः पाशैः सुगाढं पर्यबन्धत ॥
शरीरं च मृतस्यैकं समबध्नन्त पाण्डवाः ॥
विवर्जयिष्यन्ति नरा दूराद् एव शमीम् इमाम् ॥
आबद्धं शवम् अत्रेति गन्धम् आघ्राय पूतिकम् ॥
अशीतिशतवर्षेयं माता न इति वादिनः ॥
कुलधर्मो ऽयम् अस्माकं पूर्वैर् आचरितो ऽपि च ॥
समासजाना वृक्षे ऽस्मिन्न् इति वै व्याहरन्ति ते ॥
आ गोपालाविपालेभ्य आचक्षाणाः परंतपाः ॥
आजग्मुर् नगराभ्याशं पार्थाः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ॥

yāni tasyāvakāśāni dṛḍharūpāṇy amanyata ||
yatra cāpaśyata sa vai tiro varṣāṇi varṣati ||
tatra tāni dṛḍhaiḥ pāśaiḥ sugāḍhaṃ paryabandhata ||
śarīraṃ ca mṛtasyaikaṃ samabadhnanta pāṇḍavāḥ ||
vivarjayiṣyanti narā dūrād eva śamīm imām ||
ābaddhaṃ śavam atreti gandham āghrāya pūtikam ||
aśītiśatavarṣeyaṃ mātā na iti vādinaḥ ||
kuladharmo 'yam asmākaṃ pūrvair ācarito 'pi ca ||
samāsajānā vṛkṣe 'sminn iti vai vyāharanti te ||
ā gopālāvipālebhya ācakṣāṇāḥ paraṃtapāḥ ||
ājagmur nagarābhyāśaṃ pārthāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥ ||
Nakula climbed the tree and himself set the bows in the places he judged sturdy. Where he saw that rain would pass by without reaching, there he bound the weapons very securely with strong cords. The Pandavas also tied up the body of a dead man, reasoning: "People will give this shami tree a wide berth, catching its foul smell and thinking: a corpse is tied up here." To the cowherds and shepherds they said: "This is our mother; she is one hundred and eighty years old. Such is the custom of our family, observed by our forefathers too: we hang her upon this tree." So they said.

The ruse with the corpse is crude, yet exact: sometimes dharma, in defending itself, makes use of the world's revulsion. The real weapon here is not strength but an understanding of how people react.
