Vaishampayana said: "Then another came forward: possessed of Bhima's strength, blazing with splendor, moving with a lion's gait, holding in his hand a ladle and a spoon, and also a sword with a black blade, without a sheath and without blemish. In the guise of a cook, yet with supreme radiance, like the sun illumining this world, clad in dark garments, sturdy as the king of mountains, he approached the king of the Matsyas and stood before him. Seeing him approach, the king, favoring him, said to the assembled people of the country: 'This youth with shoulders raised like a lion's is exceedingly handsome. Who is this bull among men? Never before have I seen such a man; he is like the sun. However much I ponder, I find none equal to him. And today, however much I consider the nature of this bull among men, I cannot truly understand it.' Then the Pandava, magnanimous, in a most humble guise, approached Virata and said: 'O lord of men, I am a cook named Ballava; accept me as your finest preparer of dishes.'"

Bhima plays at humility with a body that cannot be made small. Virata senses the incongruity, but it is precisely this incongruity that the hidden hero needs: strength appears as an oddity, not as proof.
