वैशंपायन उवाच
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा श्रुत्वा तेषां वचस् तदा ॥
चिरम् अन्तर्मना भूत्वा प्रत्युवाच सभासदः ॥
सुदुःखा खलु कार्याणां गतिर् विज्ञातुम् अन्ततः ॥
तस्मात् सर्वे उदीक्षध्वं क्व नु स्युः पाण्डवा गताः ॥
अल्पावशिष्टं कालस्य गतभूयिष्ठम् अन्ततः ॥
तेषाम् अज्ञातचर्यायाम् अस्मिन् वर्षे त्रयोदशे ॥
अस्य वर्षस्य शेषं चेद् व्यतीयुर् इह पाण्डवाः ॥
निवृत्तसमयास् ते हि सत्यव्रतपरायणाः ॥
क्षरन्त इव नागेन्द्राः सर्व आशीविषोपमाः ॥
दुःखा भवेयुः संरब्धाः कौरवान् प्रति ते ध्रुवम् ॥
अर्वाक् कालस्य विज्ञाताः कृच्छ्ररूपधराः पुनः ॥
प्रविशेयुर् जितक्रोधास् तावद् एव पुनर् वनम् ॥
तस्मात् क्षिप्रं बुभुत्सध्वं यथा नो ऽत्यन्तम् अव्ययम् ॥
राज्यं निर्द्वन्द्वम् अव्यग्रं निःसपत्नं चिरं भवेत् ॥

tato duryodhano rājā śrutvā teṣāṃ vacas tadā ||
ciram antarmanā bhūtvā pratyuvāca sabhāsadaḥ ||
suduḥkhā khalu kāryāṇāṃ gatir vijñātum antataḥ ||
tasmāt sarve udīkṣadhvaṃ kva nu syuḥ pāṇḍavā gatāḥ ||
alpāvaśiṣṭaṃ kālasya gatabhūyiṣṭham antataḥ ||
teṣām ajñātacaryāyām asmin varṣe trayodaśe ||
asya varṣasya śeṣaṃ ced vyatīyur iha pāṇḍavāḥ ||
nivṛttasamayās te hi satyavrataparāyaṇāḥ ||
kṣaranta iva nāgendrāḥ sarva āśīviṣopamāḥ ||
duḥkhā bhaveyuḥ saṃrabdhāḥ kauravān prati te dhruvam ||
arvāk kālasya vijñātāḥ kṛcchrarūpadharāḥ punaḥ ||
praviśeyur jitakrodhās tāvad eva punar vanam ||
tasmāt kṣipraṃ bubhutsadhvaṃ yathā no 'tyantam avyayam ||
rājyaṃ nirdvandvam avyagraṃ niḥsapatnaṃ ciraṃ bhavet ||
Vaishampayana said: 'Then King Duryodhana, having heard their words, remained lost in thought for a long while and answered the assembly: "Indeed, it is very hard to know for certain how matters stand. So let all of you watch: where could the Pandavas have gone? Little time remains; most of it has already passed in this thirteenth year of their unrecognized dwelling. If the Pandavas live out the remainder of this year here, their term will be complete, for they are devoted to a true vow. Then, like serpent-kings dripping venom and resembling poisonous snakes, they, enraged, will surely become a heavy burden for the Kauravas. But if they are discovered before the term is over, they will assume a hard form once more, conquer their anger, and re-enter the forest for the same term again. So find out quickly, so that our kingdom may remain forever unshaken, free of rivalry, untroubled and without enemies, for a long time."'

Duryodhana correctly senses the Pandavas' strength, yet his mind is ruled only by fear for his power. What he wants is not peace but the prolonging of an unlawful advantage.
