वैशंपायन उवाच
ततः शारद्वतो वाक्यम् इत्य् उवाच कृपस् तदा ॥
युक्तं प्राप्तं च वृद्धेन पाण्डवान् प्रति भाषितम् ॥
धर्मार्थसहितं श्लक्ष्णं तत्त्वतश् च सहेतुमत् ॥
तत्रानुरूपं भीष्मेण ममाप्य् अत्र गिरं शृणु ॥
तेषां चैव गतिस् तीर्थैर् वासश् चैषां प्रचिन्त्यताम् ॥
नीतिर् विधीयतां चापि सांप्रतं या हिता भवेत् ॥
नावज्ञेयो रिपुस् तात प्राकृतो ऽपि बुभूषता ॥
किं पुनः पाण्डवास् तात सर्वास्त्रकुशला रणे ॥
तस्मात् सत्रं प्रविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ॥
गूढभावेषु छन्नेषु काले चोदयम् आगते ॥
स्वराष्ट्रपरराष्ट्रेषु ज्ञातव्यं बलम् आत्मनः ॥
उदये पाण्डवानां च प्राप्ते काले न संशयः ॥
निवृत्तसमयाः पार्था महात्मानो महाबलाः ॥
महोत्साहा भविष्यन्ति पाण्डवा ह्य् अतितेजसः ॥
तस्माद् बलं च कोशं च नीतिश् चापि विधीयताम् ॥
यथा कालोदये प्राप्ते सम्यक् तैः संदधामहे ॥

tataḥ śāradvato vākyam ity uvāca kṛpas tadā ||
yuktaṃ prāptaṃ ca vṛddhena pāṇḍavān prati bhāṣitam ||
dharmārthasahitaṃ ślakṣṇaṃ tattvataś ca sahetumat ||
tatrānurūpaṃ bhīṣmeṇa mamāpy atra giraṃ śṛṇu ||
teṣāṃ caiva gatis tīrthair vāsaś caiṣāṃ pracintyatām ||
nītir vidhīyatāṃ cāpi sāṃprataṃ yā hitā bhavet ||
nāvajñeyo ripus tāta prākṛto 'pi bubhūṣatā ||
kiṃ punaḥ pāṇḍavās tāta sarvāstrakuśalā raṇe ||
tasmāt satraṃ praviṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ||
gūḍhabhāveṣu channeṣu kāle codayam āgate ||
svarāṣṭrapararāṣṭreṣu jñātavyaṃ balam ātmanaḥ ||
udaye pāṇḍavānāṃ ca prāpte kāle na saṃśayaḥ ||
nivṛttasamayāḥ pārthā mahātmāno mahābalāḥ ||
mahotsāhā bhaviṣyanti pāṇḍavā hy atitejasaḥ ||
tasmād balaṃ ca kośaṃ ca nītiś cāpi vidhīyatām ||
yathā kālodaye prāpte samyak taiḥ saṃdadhāmahe ||
Vaishampayana said: "Then Kripa, son of Sharadvan, spoke these words: 'The elder has spoken rightly and fittingly about the Pandavas; Bhishma's speech was gentle, joined with dharma and benefit, true and well-reasoned. Hear my word as well, which agrees with it. We must consider their journey through the holy places, and their dwelling; and we must settle upon the policy that will now serve us best. An enemy, dear one, should not be despised, even a common one, if one desires prosperity -- still less the Pandavas, skilled in battle with every weapon. Therefore, since the great-souled Pandavas have entered a hidden existence, concealed and disguised, and the time of their rising draws near, we must without doubt know our own strength in our own land and in the lands of others. When the time comes for the Pandavas to rise, these great-souled, mighty Parthas, blazing with immense splendor, will be filled with great vigor. Therefore let strength, treasury, and policy be so arranged that when the time comes, we may join with them properly.'"

Kripa does not romanticize dharma: he translates an awareness of danger into political preparation. The wisdom here is not to despise even a hidden enemy.
