अद्याहम् अनुगच्छेयं दृढधन्वा गवां पदम् ॥
यदि मे सारथिः कश् चिद् भवेद् अश्वेषु कोविदः ॥
तम् एव नाधिगच्छामि यो मे यन्ता भवेन् नरः ॥
पश्यध्वं सारथिं क्षिप्रं मम युक्तं प्रयास्यतः ॥
अष्टाविंशतिरात्रं वा मासं वा नूनम् अन्ततः ॥
यत् तद् आसीन् महद् युद्धं तत्र मे सारथिर् हतः ॥
स लभेयं यदि त्व् अन्यं हययानविदं नरम् ॥
त्वरावान् अद्य यात्वाहं समुच्छ्रितमहाध्वजम् ॥
विगाह्य तत्परानीकं गजवाजिरथाकुलम् ॥
शस्त्रप्रतापनिर्वीर्यान् कुरूञ् जित्वानये पशून् ॥
दुर्योधनं शांतनवं कर्णं वैकर्तनं कृपम् ॥
द्रोणं च सह पुत्रेण महेष्वासान् समागतान् ॥
वित्रासयित्वा संग्रामे दानवान् इव वज्रभृत् ॥
अनेनैव मुहूर्तेन पुनः प्रत्यानये पशून् ॥
शून्यम् आसाद्य कुरवः प्रयान्त्य् आदाय गोधनम् ॥
किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यद् अहं तत्र नाभवम् ॥
पश्येयुर् अद्य मे वीर्यं कुरवस् ते समागताः ॥
किं नु पार्थो ऽर्जुनः साक्षाद् अयम् अस्मान् प्रबाधते ॥

aṣṭāviṃśatirātraṃ vā māsaṃ vā nūnam antataḥ ||
yat tad āsīn mahad yuddhaṃ tatra me sārathir hataḥ ||
sa labheyaṃ yadi tv anyaṃ hayayānavidaṃ naram ||
tvarāvān adya yātvāhaṃ samucchritamahādhvajam ||
vigāhya tatparānīkaṃ gajavājirathākulam ||
śastrapratāpanirvīryān kurūñ jitvānaye paśūn ||
duryodhanaṃ śāṃtanavaṃ karṇaṃ vaikartanaṃ kṛpam ||
droṇaṃ ca saha putreṇa maheṣvāsān samāgatān ||
vitrāsayitvā saṃgrāme dānavān iva vajrabhṛt ||
anenaiva muhūrtena punaḥ pratyānaye paśūn ||
śūnyam āsādya kuravaḥ prayānty ādāya godhanam ||
kiṃ nu śakyaṃ mayā kartuṃ yad ahaṃ tatra nābhavam ||
paśyeyur adya me vīryaṃ kuravas te samāgatāḥ ||
kiṃ nu pārtho 'rjunaḥ sākṣād ayam asmān prabādhate ||
Uttara said: 'Today I would go forth on the trail of the cows, bow held firm, if only I had some charioteer skilled with horses. I cannot find the man who would be my charioteer. Quickly, find me a fit charioteer, for I am setting out. Twenty-eight nights, or perhaps a month, have now passed since that great battle in which my charioteer was killed. If I could get another man who knows how to drive horses, I would set out today in haste beneath a tall, great banner. Plunging into that enemy host, thronged with elephants, horses, and chariots, and defeating the Kurus, stripped of their strength by the fire of weapons, I would bring back the cows. Having terrified in battle Duryodhana, Shantanava, Karna Vaikartana, Kripa, and Drona together with his son, and the great archers gathered there, as the wielder of the thunderbolt terrifies the danavas, I would bring the cows back this very instant. The Kurus, finding the town empty, are leaving with the cattle-wealth taken. What can I do, since I was not there? Today those gathered Kurus would have seen my valor and said: "Is it not Partha Arjuna himself who assails us?"'

Uttara speaks in a borrowed glory: he sets himself beside Arjuna in advance, without yet having faced the sight of an enemy. In this way his word becomes a trial that will soon overtake the one who spoke it.
