वैशंपायन उवाच
स तां दृष्ट्वा विशालाक्षीं राजपुत्रीं सखीं सखा ॥
प्रहसन्न् अब्रवीद् राजन् कुत्रागमनम् इत्य् उत ॥
तम् अब्रवीद् राजपुत्री समुपेत्य नरर्षभम् ॥
प्रणयं भावयन्ती स्म सखीमध्य इदं वचः ॥
गावो राष्ट्रस्य कुरुभिः काल्यन्ते नो बृहन्नडे ॥
तान् विजेतुं मम भ्राता प्रयास्यति धनुर्धरः ॥
नचिरं च हतस् तस्य संग्रामे रथसारथिः ॥
तेन नास्ति समः सूतो यो ऽस्य सारथ्यम् आचरेत् ॥
तस्मै प्रयतमानाय सारथ्यर्थं बृहन्नडे ॥
आचचक्षे हयज्ञाने सैरन्ध्री कौशलं तव ॥
सा सारथ्यं मम भ्रातुः कुरु साधु बृहन्नडे ॥
पुरा दूरतरं गावो ह्रियन्ते कुरुभिर् हि नः ॥
अथैतद् वचनं मे ऽद्य नियुक्ता न करिष्यसि ॥
प्रणयाद् उच्यमाना त्वं परित्यक्ष्यामि जीवितम् ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तु सुश्रोण्या तया सख्या परंतपः ॥
जगाम राजपुत्रस्य सकाशम् अमितौजसः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
sa tāṃ dṛṣṭvā viśālākṣīṃ rājaputrīṃ sakhīṃ sakhā ||
prahasann abravīd rājan kutrāgamanam ity uta ||
tam abravīd rājaputrī samupetya nararṣabham ||
praṇayaṃ bhāvayantī sma sakhīmadhya idaṃ vacaḥ ||
gāvo rāṣṭrasya kurubhiḥ kālyante no bṛhannaḍe ||
tān vijetuṃ mama bhrātā prayāsyati dhanurdharaḥ ||
naciraṃ ca hatas tasya saṃgrāme rathasārathiḥ ||
tena nāsti samaḥ sūto yo 'sya sārathyam ācaret ||
tasmai prayatamānāya sārathyarthaṃ bṛhannaḍe ||
ācacakṣe hayajñāne sairandhrī kauśalaṃ tava ||
sā sārathyaṃ mama bhrātuḥ kuru sādhu bṛhannaḍe ||
purā dūrataraṃ gāvo hriyante kurubhir hi naḥ ||
athaitad vacanaṃ me 'dya niyuktā na kariṣyasi ||
praṇayād ucyamānā tvaṃ parityakṣyāmi jīvitam ||
evam uktas tu suśroṇyā tayā sakhyā paraṃtapaḥ ||
jagāma rājaputrasya sakāśam amitaujasaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "Seeing that wide-eyed princess, his friend, he, her friend, said with a laugh, O king: 'Where have you come from?' Addressed thus by the lovely-hipped friend, that fierce destroyer of enemies heard this word and went to the prince of boundless splendor."
