सप्तमीम् अपराह्णे वै तथा नस् तैः समाहितम् ॥
अष्टम्यां पुनर् अस्माभिर् आदित्यस्योदयं प्रति ॥
ते वा गावो न पश्यन्ति यदि व स्युः पराजिताः ॥
अस्मान् वाप्य् अतिसंधाय कुर्युर् मत्स्येन संगतम् ॥
अथ वा तान् उपायातो मत्स्यो जानपदैः सह ॥
सर्वया सेनया सार्धम् अस्मान् योद्धुम् उपागतः ॥
तेषाम् एव महावीर्यः कश् चिद् एव पुरःसरः ॥
अस्माञ् जेतुम् इहायातो मत्स्यो वापि स्वयं भवेत् ॥
यद्य् एष राजा मत्स्यानां यदि बीभत्सुर् आगतः ॥
सर्वैर् योद्धव्यम् अस्माभिर् इति नः समयः कृतः ॥
अथ कस्मात् स्थिता ह्य् एते रथेषु रथसत्तमाः ॥
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपश् चैव विकर्णो द्रौणिर् एव च ॥
संभ्रान्तमनसः सर्वे काले ह्य् अस्मिन् महारथाः ॥
नान्यत्र युद्धाच् छ्रेयो ऽस्ति तथात्मा प्रणिधीयताम् ॥
आच्छिन्ने गोधने ऽस्माकम् अपि देवेन वज्रिणा ॥
यमेन वापि संग्रामे को हास्तिनपुरं व्रजेत् ॥
शरैर् अभिप्रणुन्नानां भग्नानां गहने वने ॥
को हि जीवेत् पदातीनां भवेद् अश्वेषु संशयः ॥
आचार्यं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा तथा नीतिर् विधीयताम् ॥

saṃbhrāntamanasaḥ sarve kāle hy asmin mahārathāḥ ||
nānyatra yuddhāc chreyo 'sti tathātmā praṇidhīyatām ||
ācchinne godhane 'smākam api devena vajriṇā ||
yamena vāpi saṃgrāme ko hāstinapuraṃ vrajet ||
śarair abhipraṇunnānāṃ bhagnānāṃ gahane vane ||
ko hi jīvet padātīnāṃ bhaved aśveṣu saṃśayaḥ ||
ācāryaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā tathā nītir vidhīyatām ||
"On the seventh day, in the afternoon, this was arranged by them, and on the eighth, toward sunrise, by us. Either they do not see those cattle, or they have been defeated, or, having deceived us, they have made an alliance with the Matsya king. Or Matsya himself has come to us with the men of his own country and with his whole army, to fight. Or perhaps someone of great valor among them goes ahead to conquer us; or it may be Matsya himself. If this is the king of the Matsyas, if it is Bibhatsu who has come, we must all fight together -- such is our agreement. Why, then, do these finest of charioteers stand upon their chariots: Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Vikarna, and Drauni? All the great chariot-warriors are now troubled in mind. There is no good other than battle; let the mind be fixed upon that. If our great wealth of cattle is carried off in battle even by the god who wields the thunderbolt, or by Yama himself, who will return to Hastinapura? Of the foot soldiers, driven back by arrows and scattered in the dense forest, who indeed will remain alive? And of the horses too there will be doubt. Having set the teacher behind us, let policy be arranged accordingly."
