तच् छ्रुत्वा दुर्मना देवी बृहस्पतिम् उवाच ह ॥
रक्ष मां नहुषाद् ब्रह्मंस् तवास्मि शरणं गता ॥
सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नां ब्रह्मस् त्वं मां प्रभाषसे ॥
देवराजस्य दयिताम् अत्यन्तसुखभागिनीम् ॥
अवैधव्येन संयुक्ताम् एकपत्नीं पतिव्रताम् ॥
उक्तवान् असि मां पूर्वम् ऋतां तां कुरु वै गिरम् ॥
नोक्तपूर्वं च भगवन् मृषा ते किं चिद् ईश्वर ॥
तस्माद् एतद् भवेत् सत्यं त्वयोक्तं द्विजसत्तम ॥
बृहस्पतिर् अथोवाच इन्द्राणीं भयमोहिताम् ॥
यद् उक्तासि मया देवि सत्यं तद् भविता ध्रुवम् ॥
tac chrutvā durmanā devī bṛhaspatim uvāca ha ||
rakṣa māṃ nahuṣād brahmaṃs tavāsmi śaraṇaṃ gatā ||
sarvalakṣaṇasaṃpannāṃ brahmas tvaṃ māṃ prabhāṣase ||
devarājasya dayitām atyantasukhabhāginīm ||
avaidhavyena saṃyuktām ekapatnīṃ pativratām ||
uktavān asi māṃ pūrvam ṛtāṃ tāṃ kuru vai giram ||
noktapūrvaṃ ca bhagavan mṛṣā te kiṃ cid īśvara ||
tasmād etad bhavet satyaṃ tvayoktaṃ dvijasattama ||
bṛhaspatir athovāca indrāṇīṃ bhayamohitām ||
yad uktāsi mayā devi satyaṃ tad bhavitā dhruvam ||
'Let Shachi hasten and come to my dwelling today.' Grieved at heart on hearing this, the goddess said to Brihaspati: 'Protect me, O brahmin, from this Nahusha. I come to you as my refuge. You have always said, O brahmin, that I possess every auspicious mark, being the beloved of the king of the gods; that I am chaste, devoted to my lord, and destined never to become a widow. All this you have already spoken of me. Let your words prove true. O possessor of great power, O lord, you have never spoken an idle word. Therefore, O best of brahmins, what you have said must be the truth.' Then Brihaspati said to Indra's queen, who was overwhelmed with fear: 'What I have told you, O goddess, shall surely come true.'
