वैशंपायन उवाच
युयुधानस् ततो वीरः सात्वतानां महारथः ॥
महता चतुरङ्गेण बलेनागाद् युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
तस्य योधा महावीर्या नानादेशसमागताः ॥
नानाप्रहरणा वीराः शोभयां चक्रिरे बलम् ॥
परश्वधैर् भिण्डिपालैः शक्तितोमरमुद्गरैः ॥
शक्त्यृष्टिपरशुप्रासैः करवालैश् च निर्मलैः ॥
खड्गकार्मुकनिर्यूहैः शरैश् च विविधैर् अपि ॥
तैलधौतैः प्रकाशद्भिस् तद् अशोभत वै बलम् ॥
तस्य मेघप्रकाशस्य शस्त्रैस् तैः शोभितस्य च ॥
बभूव रूपं सैन्यस्य मेघस्येव सविद्युतः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
yuyudhānas tato vīraḥ sātvatānāṃ mahārathaḥ ||
mahatā caturaṅgeṇa balenāgād yudhiṣṭhiram ||
tasya yodhā mahāvīryā nānādeśasamāgatāḥ ||
nānāpraharaṇā vīrāḥ śobhayāṃ cakrire balam ||
paraśvadhair bhiṇḍipālaiḥ śaktitomaramudgaraiḥ ||
śaktyṛṣṭiparaśuprāsaiḥ karavālaiś ca nirmalaiḥ ||
khaḍgakārmukaniryūhaiḥ śaraiś ca vividhair api ||
tailadhautaiḥ prakāśadbhis tad aśobhata vai balam ||
tasya meghaprakāśasya śastrais taiḥ śobhitasya ca ||
babhūva rūpaṃ sainyasya meghasyeva savidyutaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: “Then Yuyudhana, the great hero of the Satvata race, came to Yudhishthira with a mighty army of foot soldiers, horses, chariots, and elephants — hammers and clubs and staves and cords, and stainless swords and daggers, and arrows of many kinds, all of the finest quality; and the army, adorned with these weapons and resembling in hue a cloud-laden sky, took on an appearance like a mass of clouds with flashes of lightning amid it.”

This passage (5.19.1–5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already unfolding against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, through the choice of an embassy, through faithfulness to one's word, and through the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
