Arjuna said: "Now you, O Keshava, are the best friend of all the Kurus. Being kin to both sides, you are a dear friend to each. It falls to you to establish peace between the Pandavas and the sons of Dhritarashtra. You, O Keshava, are equal to the task, and so it is for you to secure reconciliation. O lotus-eyed one, going forth from here for the sake of peace, O slayer of enemies, tell our ever-wrathful brother Suyodhana what truly must be said: 'If foolish Duryodhana does not accept your beneficial and salutary counsel, laden with virtue and gain, he will surely fall victim to his own fate.' Kuru." Vaishampayana continued: "When the night had passed, the bright sun rose in the east. It was the hour of Maitra, and the rays of the sun were still gentle. The month was Kaumuda of Karttika, under the constellation Revati. It was the season of dew, autumn having already departed. The land around was covered with an abundant harvest. It was at just such a time that Janardana, greatest of the mighty, enjoying excellent health, having heard the auspicious, sacred-sounding, and sweet words of satisfied brahmins — as Vasava himself listens to the praises of the celestial sages — and having also performed his usual morning acts and rites, purified himself by bathing and adorned his body with unguents and ornaments, and worshipped both the Sun and Fire. And, having touched the tail of a bull and reverently bowed to the brahmins, having circled the sacred fire and glanced at the customary auspicious objects set out before him, Janardana recalled Yudhishthira's words and turned to Satyaki, grandson of Sini, seated beside him, saying: 'Let my chariot be made ready, and let my conch and discus, together with my mace, quivers, javelins, and every kind of weapon, offensive and defensive, take their place, for Duryodhana, Karna, and the son of Suvala are all wicked souls, and enemies, however contemptible, must never be disregarded even by the mighty.' Understanding the wish of Keshava, wielder of the discus and mace, his servants at once set about yoking his chariot. And that chariot in splendor resembled the fire that appears at the dissolution of all things, and in speed matched it too. It was fitted with two wheels that in brilliance resembled the sun and moon. Upon it were figured moons, crescent and full, as well as fish, animals, and birds, and it was adorned with garlands of many flowers, and with pearls and gems of every kind set around it. Endowed with the splendor of the rising sun, it was vast and beautiful.
