"What has happened to you? Is this truly the fruit of our coming here? How long must we remain in this place? Did you conceive in your mind something inauspicious, something that defiles dharma? Surely such a transgression of yours cannot be a small one." Then Suparna said to the brahmin: "O twice-born one, I indeed thought of leading this perfected ascetic woman away from here to where Prajapati dwells, where the great god Mahadeva dwells, where eternal Vishnu dwells, where dharma and sacrifice dwell, so that she might reside there. Bowing down, I entreated this holy lady, wishing her well; this alone was what I pondered in my grieving mind."

Galava at once looks for a moral cause of the misfortune rather than a merely external one. His question is precise: a violation of dharma begins in the mind. Garuda wished to exalt Shandili, but behind his good intention lay a kind of presumption -- he decided on the ascetic woman's behalf where she ought to be better off.
