Yayāti said: 'Therefore, here is my daughter, who will become the founder of four lineages. She resembles a daughter of the gods, upholds all dharma, and by her beauty is ever desired by gods, men, and asuras, O Gālava. Accept my young daughter. For her, kings will certainly give even a kingdom — what then to speak of four hundred black-eared horses? May your honor accept this daughter of mine, Mādhavī. Then I shall become possessed of a grandson through a daughter; this is the desired blessing for me, O lord.' Having accepted the maiden, Gālava, together with the bird, said, 'We shall meet again,' and set out on his way with her.

Yayāti offers not money but Mādhavī, because through her Gālava's aim can be achieved. The verse shows at once the ancient social mechanism of bride-price and Yayāti's personal wish for a grandson. For the narrative, Mādhavī becomes a means of fulfilling the vow, yet her greatness is already marked: she is capable of establishing four lineages.
