ततः प्रतर्दनो ऽप्य् आह वाक्यं क्षत्रियपुंगवः ॥
यथा धर्मरतिर् नित्यं नित्यं युद्धपरायणः ॥
प्राप्तवान् अस्मि यल् लोके क्षत्रधर्मोद्भवं यशः ॥
वीरशब्दफलं चैव तेन संयुज्यतां भवान् ॥
शिबिरौशीनरो धीमान् उवाच मधुरां गिरम् ॥
यथा बालेषु नारीषु वैहार्येषु तथैव च ॥
संगरेषु निपातेषु तथापद् व्यसनेषु च ॥
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥
यथा प्राणांश् च राज्यं च राजन् कर्म सुखानि च ॥
त्यजेयं न पुनः सत्यं तेन सत्येन खं व्रज ॥
tataḥ pratardano 'py āha vākyaṃ kṣatriyapuṃgavaḥ ||
yathā dharmaratir nityaṃ nityaṃ yuddhaparāyaṇaḥ ||
prāptavān asmi yal loke kṣatradharmodbhavaṃ yaśaḥ ||
vīraśabdaphalaṃ caiva tena saṃyujyatāṃ bhavān ||
śibirauśīnaro dhīmān uvāca madhurāṃ giram ||
yathā bāleṣu nārīṣu vaihāryeṣu tathaiva ca ||
saṃgareṣu nipāteṣu tathāpad vyasaneṣu ca ||
anṛtaṃ noktapūrvaṃ me tena satyena khaṃ vraja ||
yathā prāṇāṃś ca rājyaṃ ca rājan karma sukhāni ca ||
tyajeyaṃ na punaḥ satyaṃ tena satyena khaṃ vraja ||
«Then Pratardana, bull among kshatriyas, likewise spoke these words: 'Since I have ever delighted in dharma and am ever devoted to battle, the fame that I have won in the world, born of kshatriya dharma, and the fruit of the name of hero — let your grace be joined with that.' Wise Shibi Aushinara spoke sweet words: 'Neither with children, nor with women, nor in amusements, nor in battles, nor in perilous falls, nor in misfortunes and calamities have I ever before spoken untruth. By that truth, go to heaven. As I would forsake my lives, my kingdom, my deeds and my pleasures, O king, but never truth — by that truth, go to heaven.'»

Pratardana offers the fruit of kshatriya dharma, while Shibi offers the power of truth. Their words show different forms of righteousness: courage, fidelity to duty in battle, mercy, and truthfulness even in danger. Heaven is restored to Yayati not through petition but through the accumulated dharma of his descendants.
