तस्मिंश् च निधनं प्राप्ते सत्यवत्या मते स्थितः ॥
विचित्रवीर्यं राजानम् अभ्यषिञ्चं यथाविधि ॥
मयाभिषिक्तो राजेन्द्र यवीयान् अपि धर्मतः ॥
विचित्रवीर्यो धर्मात्मा माम् एव समुदैक्षत ॥
तस्य दारक्रियां तात चिकीर्षुर् अहम् अप्य् उत ॥
अनुरूपाद् इव कुलाद् इति चिन्त्य मनो दधे ॥
तथाश्रौषं महाबाहो तिस्रः कन्याः स्वयंवरे ॥
रूपेणाप्रतिमाः सर्वाः काशिराजसुतास् तदा ॥
अम्बा चैवाम्बिका चैव तथैवाम्बालिकापरा ॥
राजानश् च समाहूताः पृथिव्यां भरतर्षभ ॥
अम्बा ज्येष्ठाभवत् तासाम् अम्बिका त्व् अथ मध्यमा ॥
अम्बालिका च राजेन्द्र राजकन्या यवीयसी ॥
tasmiṃś ca nidhanaṃ prāpte satyavatyā mate sthitaḥ ||
vicitravīryaṃ rājānam abhyaṣiñcaṃ yathāvidhi ||
mayābhiṣikto rājendra yavīyān api dharmataḥ ||
vicitravīryo dharmātmā mām eva samudaikṣata ||
tasya dārakriyāṃ tāta cikīrṣur aham apy uta ||
anurūpād iva kulād iti cintya mano dadhe ||
tathāśrauṣaṃ mahābāho tisraḥ kanyāḥ svayaṃvare ||
rūpeṇāpratimāḥ sarvāḥ kāśirājasutās tadā ||
ambā caivāmbikā caiva tathaivāmbālikāparā ||
rājānaś ca samāhūtāḥ pṛthivyāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
ambā jyeṣṭhābhavat tāsām ambikā tv atha madhyamā ||
ambālikā ca rājendra rājakanyā yavīyasī ||
When he perished, I, standing by the wish of Satyavati, duly anointed Vichitravirya as king. Though Vichitravirya, righteous of soul, was younger, once anointed by me, O lord of kings, he looked to me alone as his guide, in accordance with dharma. Wishing to arrange his marriage, O dear one, I resolved to take a wife from a fitting family for him. Then I heard, O mighty-armed one, that at a svayamvara there were three maidens, all unmatched in beauty, daughters of the king of Kashi: Amba, Ambika, and also Ambalika. And kings from across the earth were summoned, O bull among the Bharatas. Amba was the eldest of them, Ambika the middle one, and Ambalika, O lord of kings, the youngest princess.

Bhishma answers Duryodhana not with abstract reasoning but with the story of his own vow and deeds. The account of the svayamvara of the king of Kashi shows his former might: alone, he defeated the assembled kings and carried off the princesses to continue the line of Kuru. Yet this very story leads to Shikhandin and to the boundary Bhishma will not cross: his martial power is subordinate to his vow, not the other way around.
