दुःखं छेत्स्यामि ते ऽहं वै मयि वर्तस्व पुत्रिके ॥
पर्याप्तं ते मनः पुत्रि यद् एवं परिशुष्यसि ॥
गच्छ मद्वचनाद् रामं जामदग्न्यं तपस्विनम् ॥
रामस् तव महद् दुःखं शोकं चापनयिष्यति ॥
हनिष्यति रणे भीष्मं न करिष्यति चेद् वचः ॥
तं गच्छ भार्गवश्रेष्ठं कालाग्निसमतेजसम् ॥
प्रतिष्ठापयिता स त्वां समे पथि महातपाः ॥
ततस् तु सस्वरं बाष्पम् उत्सृजन्ती पुनः पुनः ॥
अब्रवीत् पितरं मातुः सा तदा होत्रवाहनम् ॥
अभिवादयित्वा शिरसा गमिष्ये तव शासनात् ॥
अपि नामाद्य पश्येयम् आर्यं तं लोकविश्रुतम् ॥
duḥkhaṃ chetsyāmi te 'haṃ vai mayi vartasva putrike ||
paryāptaṃ te manaḥ putri yad evaṃ pariśuṣyasi ||
gaccha madvacanād rāmaṃ jāmadagnyaṃ tapasvinam ||

haniṣyati raṇe bhīṣmaṃ na kariṣyati ced vacaḥ ||
taṃ gaccha bhārgavaśreṣṭhaṃ kālāgnisamatejasam ||
pratiṣṭhāpayitā sa tvāṃ same pathi mahātapāḥ ||
tatas tu sasvaraṃ bāṣpam utsṛjantī punaḥ punaḥ ||
abravīt pitaraṃ mātuḥ sā tadā hotravāhanam ||
abhivādayitvā śirasā gamiṣye tava śāsanāt ||
api nāmādya paśyeyam āryaṃ taṃ lokaviśrutam ||
'I will put an end to your pain. Rely on me, my little daughter. Enough of tormenting your mind, my daughter, since you are withering away so with grief. At my word, go to the ascetic Rama, son of Jamadagni. Rama will remove your great suffering and sorrow; and if Bhishma does not heed his word, he will slay him in battle. Go to this foremost of the Bhargavas, equal in splendor to the fire of doomsday — this great ascetic will set you upon the right path.' Then she, shedding tears again and again with sobs, said to Hotravahana, the father of her mother: 'Having bowed my head, I shall go at your command. Perhaps this very day I may see that noble one, renowned throughout the world.'

In this chapter Amba's plight moves from personal grief toward a search for effective protection. The ascetics propose the ordinary social path: return the girl to her father's authority, since life in the forest is dangerous, especially for a princess without support. Amba refuses: returning would mean disgrace among her kin and would not heal the wound within her. The arrival of Hotravahana changes the course of events — he takes up her suffering as a family duty and directs her to Rama Jamadagnya. Thus austerity, kinship responsibility, and kshatriya retribution converge on a single path, one leading toward the future confrontation with Bhishma.
