प्रत्याजघ्ने च तद् रामो गुह्यकास्त्रेण भारत ॥
ततो ऽस्त्रम् अहम् आग्नेयम् अनुमन्त्र्य प्रयुक्तवान् ॥
वारुणेनैव रामस् तद् वारयाम् आस मे विभुः ॥
एवम् अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि रामस्याहम् अवारयम् ॥
रामश् च मम तेजस्वी दिव्यास्त्रविद् अरिंदमः ॥
ततो मां सव्यतो राजन् रामः कुर्वन् द्विजोत्तमः ॥
उरस्य् अविध्यत् संक्रुद्धो जामदग्न्यो महाबलः ॥
ततो ऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ संन्यषीदं रथोत्तमे ॥
अथ मां कश्मलाविष्टं सूतस् तूर्णम् अपावहत् ॥
गोरुतं भरतश्रेष्ठ रामबाणप्रपीडितम् ॥
tato 'ham astraṃ vāyavyaṃ jāmadagnye prayuktavān ||
pratyājaghne ca tad rāmo guhyakāstreṇa bhārata ||
tato 'stram aham āgneyam anumantrya prayuktavān ||
vāruṇenaiva rāmas tad vārayām āsa me vibhuḥ ||
evam astrāṇi divyāni rāmasyāham avārayam ||
rāmaś ca mama tejasvī divyāstravid ariṃdamaḥ ||
tato māṃ savyato rājan rāmaḥ kurvan dvijottamaḥ ||
urasy avidhyat saṃkruddho jāmadagnyo mahābalaḥ ||
tato 'haṃ bharataśreṣṭha saṃnyaṣīdaṃ rathottame ||
atha māṃ kaśmalāviṣṭaṃ sūtas tūrṇam apāvahat ||
gorutaṃ bharataśreṣṭha rāmabāṇaprapīḍitam ||
Then I employed the wind-astra against Jamadagnya, but Rama repelled it with the astra of the Guhyakas, O Bharata. Then, having recited the mantra, I employed the fire-astra, and the lordly Rama stopped my astra with the water-astra of Varuna. Thus I repelled Rama's divine astras, and the blazing Rama, knower of divine astras and crusher of foes, repelled mine. Then Jamadagnya, best of the twice-born, enraged and mighty, coming from my left side, struck me in the chest. Then, O best of the Bharatas, I sank down in my splendid chariot, and the charioteer swiftly carried me away, overcome by faintness, groaning heavily and afflicted by Rama's arrow.

This chapter continues to unfold the double nature of this duel: outwardly a contest between two unsurpassed warriors, but inwardly a test of the capacity to remember dharma amid the fury of battle. Bhishma bows to Rama once more before standing against him, showing that reverence for one's teacher does not vanish even in combat. The exchange of astras raises the fight to a cosmic scale: the sky is closed over with arrows, fire arises, the world shudders at Rama's fall. Yet behind this power lies a troubling truth: when knowledge and vow are turned into weapons, nature itself answers with turmoil. The close of day again halts the battle, like a boundary reminding us that even the sternest kshatriya resolve must have a limit.
