विसृज्य दूतं दाशार्णं द्रुपदः शोककर्शितः ॥
समेत्य भार्यां रहिते वाक्यम् आह नराधिपः ॥
भयेन महताविष्टो हृदि शोकेन चाहतः ॥
पाञ्चालराजो दयितां मातरं वै शिखण्डिनः ॥
अभियास्यति मां कोपात् संबन्धी सुमहाबलः ॥
हिरण्यवर्मा नृपतिः कर्षमाणो वरूथिनीम् ॥
किम् इदानीं करिष्यामि मूढः कन्याम् इमां प्रति ॥
शिखण्डी किल पुत्रस् ते कन्येति परिशङ्कितः ॥
इति निश्चित्य तत्त्वेन समित्रः सबलानुगः ॥
वञ्चितो ऽस्मीति मन्वानो मां किलोद्धर्तुम् इच्छति ॥

hiraṇyavarmā nṛpatiḥ karṣamāṇo varūthinīm ||
kim idānīṃ kariṣyāmi mūḍhaḥ kanyām imāṃ prati ||
śikhaṇḍī kila putras te kanyeti pariśaṅkitaḥ ||
iti niścitya tattvena samitraḥ sabalānugaḥ ||
vañcito 'smīti manvāno māṃ kiloddhartum icchati ||
Having dismissed the envoy of Dasharna, Drupada, worn out with grief, came together privately with his wife and spoke these words to her, O king. Overcome by great fear and stricken at heart with sorrow, the king of Panchala addressed the beloved mother of Shikhandin: 'Hiranyavarman, the mighty king and our kinsman by marriage, will march against me in anger, leading his army. What am I to do now, bewildered, about this daughter? Shikhandin, they say, is your son, but he has been suspected of being a girl. Having determined this with certainty, he, together with his friends and army, believes: "I have been deceived," and wishes to destroy me.'
