संजय उवाच
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां पुनर् एव सुतस् तव ॥
मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य पितामहम् अपृच्छत ॥
पाण्डवेयस्य गाङ्गेय यद् एतत् सैन्यम् उत्तमम् ॥
प्रभूतनरनागाश्वं महारथसमाकुलम् ॥
भीमार्जुनप्रभृतिभिर् महेष्वासैर् महाबलैः ॥
लोकपालोपमैर् गुप्तं धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमैः ॥
अप्रधृष्यम् अनावार्यम् उद्वृत्तम् इव सागरम् ॥
सेनासागरम् अक्षोभ्यम् अपि देवैर् महाहवे ॥
केन कालेन गाङ्गेय क्षपयेथा महाद्युते ॥
आचार्यो वा महेष्वासः कृपो वा सुमहाबलः ॥

lokapālopamair guptaṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamaiḥ ||
apradhṛṣyam anāvāryam udvṛttam iva sāgaram ||
senāsāgaram akṣobhyam api devair mahāhave ||
kena kālena gāṅgeya kṣapayethā mahādyute ||
ācāryo vā maheṣvāsaḥ kṛpo vā sumahābalaḥ ||
Sanjaya said: "When the night had passed and dawn came, your son again asked the grandfather amid the whole army: 'O son of Ganga, this excellent army of the Pandava is rich in men, elephants and horses, full of great chariot-warriors, guarded by mighty great archers headed by Bhima and Arjuna, who are like the guardians of the world, and led by Dhrishtadyumna. This ocean of an army is unassailable, unstoppable, and unshakable even for the gods in a great battle, like a swelling sea. In what time, O radiant son of Ganga, will you destroy it? And the teacher, the great archer, or mighty Kripa?'"

This chapter returns the conversation to a military assessment of strength before the battle. Duryodhana wants to measure the Pandava army in number of days, but the answers of the senior warriors reveal differing measures of realism and self-confidence. Bhishma speaks as a commander bound by the dharma of battle: an honest fight against an honest foe, a deceitful one against a deceiver. Drona admits his age but not any loss of strength. Karna, meanwhile, promises the impossible -- before he has met Arjuna and Krishna -- and Bhishma's laughter exposes the gap between boasting and true battle knowledge.
