Vyasa said: "This is called the sign of coming victory: the sacrificial fire burns clear, its flames rise upward, the flame turns to the right, there is no smoke, and auspicious fragrances waft from the oblations. Where conches and mridangas sound deep and loud, and the sun and moon shine with pure rays, this too is called the sign of coming victory. For those setting out on the march, pleasant cries of crows from behind urge them on, O king, while cries from ahead stop them. If in battle the birds of omen—royal geese, parrots, cranes, and shatapatras—utter auspicious sounds and circle to the right, the brahmins surely foretell victory there. Those armies that gleam with ornaments, armor, banners, bright faces, and the golden radiance of their men, so that they are hard to look upon, defeat their enemies. O Bharata, where the voices of the warriors are joyful, their courage firm, and their garlands do not wilt, those overcome their foes in battle. A favorable wind aids the undertaking: for one who has set forth, it is beneficial from the right and from behind, while from the front it hinders. Where sounds, forms, tastes, touches, and smells manifest as auspicious, where the warriors are ever full of spirit, there victory is certain. If winds, clouds, birds, storm-clouds, and rainbows follow the army, these are the signs of the victors, O lord of peoples; the opposite signs occur in those destined for death, O ruler of men."

Vyasa does not answer Dhritarashtra with divination for its own sake but in the language of order. Victory is bound up with the clarity of fire, the purity of light, the rightward turn, the joy of the army, and auspicious signs perceived by the senses. When the inner state of the warriors and the outer world stand in accord, this becomes a sign of strength.
