Day after day the elder, the forefather of the Kurus, and the son of Bharadvaja, rising at dawn in restraint, would say: "Let victory be to the sons of Pandu!" Yet these same two subduers of foes fought for your cause, as the agreement had been made. Your father Devavrata, knower of every fine point of dharma, gathered the kings and spoke these words: "Kshatriyas, before you stands the great gate thrown open to heaven. Go by this path to the world of Shakra and to dwelling together with Brahma. This is your eternal path, trodden by the ancestors and by those still more ancient before them. Exalt yourselves in battle with a mind unshaken. Nabhaga, Yayati, Mandhata, Nahusha, and Nriga attained perfection and the highest abode through deeds such as these. For a kshatriya, to die at home of illness is unrighteousness; to meet death in battle is his eternal dharma."

Bhishma and Drona bless the Pandavas even while fighting for the Kauravas. This is not duplicity but the tragic tension between private knowledge of the truth and an accepted duty. Bhishma's address to the kings speaks in the language of kshatriya dharma: death in a righteous battle can become a gate upward, yet the scene itself already shows how terrible it is when the dharma of duty becomes bound to the unrighteous side.
