There elephants and chariots, adorned with gold of Jambunada, shone like clouds with lightning. The banners of your warriors, O lord of men, took many forms; in their golden armlets they gleamed like blazing fires. The bright standards of both allied and enemy hosts, O Bharata, were seen like the banners of Mahendra in his heavenly abodes. Heroes in golden armor, shining like fire and sun, looked like blazing planets. Bull-eyed great archers, bearing banners, with varied weapons raised and guards upon their hands, stood at the head of the army.

The recurring gleam of gold, fire, sun, and heavenly standards underscores the regal splendor of the battle. Yet this light brings no peace: it makes the army resemble blazing luminaries — a sign of heavenly tension and of catastrophe close at hand.
