संजय उवाच
बृहतीं धार्तराष्ट्राणां दृष्ट्वा सेनां समुद्यताम् ॥
विषादम् अगमद् राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
व्यूहं भीष्मेण चाभेद्यं कल्पितं प्रेक्ष्य पाण्डवः ॥
अभेद्यम् इव संप्रेक्ष्य विषण्णो ऽर्जुनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
धनंजय कथं शक्यम् अस्माभिर् योद्धुम् आहवे ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रैर् महाबाहो येषां योद्धा पितामहः ॥
अक्षोभ्यो ऽयम् अभेद्यश् च भीष्मेणामित्रकर्शिना ॥
कल्पितः शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना भूरितेजसा ॥
ते वयं संशयं प्राप्ताः ससैन्याः शत्रुकर्शन ॥
कथम् अस्मान् महाव्यूहाद् उद्यानं नो भविष्यति ॥

bṛhatīṃ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ dṛṣṭvā senāṃ samudyatām ||
viṣādam agamad rājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
vyūhaṃ bhīṣmeṇa cābhedyaṃ kalpitaṃ prekṣya pāṇḍavaḥ ||
abhedyam iva saṃprekṣya viṣaṇṇo 'rjunam abravīt ||
dhanaṃjaya kathaṃ śakyam asmābhir yoddhum āhave ||
dhārtarāṣṭrair mahābāho yeṣāṃ yoddhā pitāmahaḥ ||
akṣobhyo 'yam abhedyaś ca bhīṣmeṇāmitrakarśinā ||
kalpitaḥ śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā bhūritejasā ||
te vayaṃ saṃśayaṃ prāptāḥ sasainyāḥ śatrukarśana ||
katham asmān mahāvyūhād udyānaṃ no bhaviṣyati ||
Sanjaya said: "Having seen the vast army of the sons of Dhritarashtra arrayed and ready, King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, fell into despondency. The Pandava looked upon the battle-formation arranged by Bhishma as though it were impenetrable, and, sorrowful, said to Arjuna: 'O Dhananjaya, how can we fight in battle against the sons of Dhritarashtra, O mighty-armed one, when their warrior is the grandsire himself? This array, drawn up by the greatly radiant Bhishma, tormentor of foes, according to the rules of the science of war, is unshakeable and impenetrable. We, with our army, have fallen into peril, O queller of enemies; how shall we find a way out of this great formation?'"

Yudhishthira does not lose faith, but honestly perceives the scale of the danger. His anxiety matters: a righteous king need not feign fearlessness before a manifest show of strength. He turns to Arjuna because true resolve begins not with denying fear, but with seeking the right ground for action.
