धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
केषां प्रहृष्टास् तत्राग्रे योधा युध्यन्ति संजय ॥
उदग्रमनसः के ऽत्र के वा दीना विचेतसः ॥
के पूर्वं प्राहरंस् तत्र युद्धे हृदयकम्पने ॥
मामकाः पाण्डवानां वा तन् ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥
कस्य सेनासमुदये गन्धमाल्यसमुद्भवः ॥
वाचः प्रदक्षिणाश् चैव योधानाम् अभिगर्जताम् ॥
संजय उवाच
उभयोः सेनयोस् तत्र योधा जहृषिरे मुदा ॥
स्रग्धूपपानगन्धानाम् उभयत्र समुद्भवः ॥
संहतानाम् अनीकानां व्यूढानां भरतर्षभ ॥
संसर्पताम् उदीर्णानां विमर्दः सुमहान् अभूत् ॥
वादित्रशब्दस् तुमुलः शङ्खभेरीविमिश्रितः ॥
कुञ्जराणां च नदतां सैन्यानां च प्रहृष्यताम् ॥

keṣāṃ prahṛṣṭās tatrāgre yodhā yudhyanti saṃjaya ||
udagramanasaḥ ke 'tra ke vā dīnā vicetasaḥ ||
ke pūrvaṃ prāharaṃs tatra yuddhe hṛdayakampane ||
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ vā tan mamācakṣva saṃjaya ||
kasya senāsamudaye gandhamālyasamudbhavaḥ ||
vācaḥ pradakṣiṇāś caiva yodhānām abhigarjatām ||
saṃjaya uvāca
ubhayoḥ senayos tatra yodhā jahṛṣire mudā ||
sragdhūpapānagandhānām ubhayatra samudbhavaḥ ||
saṃhatānām anīkānāṃ vyūḍhānāṃ bharatarṣabha ||
saṃsarpatām udīrṇānāṃ vimardaḥ sumahān abhūt ||
vāditraśabdas tumulaḥ śaṅkhabherīvimiśritaḥ ||
kuñjarāṇāṃ ca nadatāṃ sainyānāṃ ca prahṛṣyatām ||
Dhritarashtra said: "Sanjaya, whose warriors, joyful, fight there in the front ranks? Who here has a lofty spirit, and who is downcast and bewildered? Who struck the first blow in this battle that shakes the heart, mine or the Pandavas'? Tell me this. At whose gathering of the army did fragrant scents, garlands, and auspicious words arise among the roaring warriors?" Sanjaya said: "There, in both armies, the warriors rejoiced with delight; on both sides arose the fragrance of garlands, incense, drink, and perfumes. When the massed and arrayed battle ranks, O bull among the Bharatas, advanced upon one another, a vast clash arose. The tumultuous sound of instruments, mingled with conch shells and kettledrums, with the trumpeting of elephants and the exultation of the armies, filled the field."

Dhritarashtra again tries to learn on whose side the favorable signs lie. Sanjaya's answer offers him no easy comfort: joy, fragrance, sound, and readiness are present on both sides alike. The war has already entered the point of collision, where outward signs no longer resolve the moral question.
