Shri Bhagavan said: "O sinless one, in this world I long ago proclaimed a twofold steadfast path: the yoga of knowledge for the Samkhyas, and the yoga of action for the yogins. Not by refraining from action does a man attain freedom from karma, nor by renunciation alone does he arrive at perfection. No one can ever remain without action even for a moment: everyone is helplessly driven to act by the gunas born of nature. Whoever restrains the organs of action yet sits recalling the objects of the senses with his mind, deluded in himself, is called a hypocrite. But whoever, having mastered the senses with the mind, undertakes the yoga of action through the organs of action without attachment, excels, O Arjuna. Perform your prescribed action, for action is better than inaction. Even the maintenance of your body would not be accomplished through inaction."

Krishna does not oppose knowledge and action as mutually exclusive paths. False renunciation arises when outward stillness conceals inward attachment; true yoga begins where action is performed without appropriation.
