"What is action and what is inaction — in this even the sages were confused. Therefore I shall explain action to you; knowing it, you will be freed from evil. One must understand action, one must understand forbidden action, and one must understand inaction, for the path of karma is deep. Whoever sees inaction in action and action in inaction is wise among men; he is a yogin and the accomplisher of all deeds. One whose every undertaking is free of desire and design, whose actions are burned by the fire of knowledge — him the wise call learned. Having abandoned attachment to the fruit of action, ever content and independent, he, even while engaged in action, does nothing at all. Without expectation, with mind restrained, having renounced all possessiveness, performing only the necessary bodily action, he incurs no sin. Content with what comes unsought, beyond the pairs of opposites, free of envy, equal in success and failure, even acting, he is not bound. For one who has abandoned attachment, who is liberated, whose consciousness is established in knowledge and who acts for the sake of sacrifice, all action dissolves entirely."

The paradox of action and inaction reveals the heart of karma-yoga. Outwardly a person acts, but when action is purified by knowledge, sacrifice, and freedom from possessiveness, it creates no bonds of karma.
