संजय उवाच
पूर्वाह्णे तस्य रौद्रस्य युद्धम् अह्नो विशां पते ॥
प्रावर्तत महाघोरं राज्ञां देहावकर्तनम् ॥
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च संग्रामे विजिगीषताम् ॥
सिंहानाम् इव संह्रादो दिवम् उर्वीं च नादयन् ॥
आसीत् किलकिलाशब्दस् तलशङ्खरवैः सह ॥
जज्ञिरे सिंहनादाश् च शूराणां प्रतिगर्जताम् ॥
तलत्राभिहताश् चैव ज्याशब्दा भरतर्षभ ॥
पत्तीनां पादशब्दाश् च वाजिनां च महास्वनाः ॥
तोत्त्राङ्कुशनिपाताश् च आयुधानां च निस्वनाः ॥
घण्टाशब्दाश् च नागानाम् अन्योन्यम् अभिधावताम् ॥
तस्मिन् समुदिते शब्दे तुमुले लोमहर्षणे ॥
बभूव रथनिर्घोषः पर्जन्यनिनदोपमः ॥
ते मनः क्रूरम् आधाय समभित्यक्तजीविताः ॥
पाण्डवान् अभ्यवर्तन्त सर्व एवोच्छ्रितध्वजाः ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
pūrvāhṇe tasya raudrasya yuddham ahno viśāṃ pate ||
prāvartata mahāghoraṃ rājñāṃ dehāvakartanam ||
kurūṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca saṃgrāme vijigīṣatām ||
siṃhānām iva saṃhrādo divam urvīṃ ca nādayan ||
āsīt kilakilāśabdas talaśaṅkharavaiḥ saha ||
jajñire siṃhanādāś ca śūrāṇāṃ pratigarjatām ||
talatrābhihatāś caiva jyāśabdā bharatarṣabha ||
pattīnāṃ pādaśabdāś ca vājināṃ ca mahāsvanāḥ ||
tottrāṅkuśanipātāś ca āyudhānāṃ ca nisvanāḥ ||
ghaṇṭāśabdāś ca nāgānām anyonyam abhidhāvatām ||
tasmin samudite śabde tumule lomaharṣaṇe ||
babhūva rathanirghoṣaḥ parjanyaninadopamaḥ ||
te manaḥ krūram ādhāya samabhityaktajīvitāḥ ||
pāṇḍavān abhyavartanta sarva evocchritadhvajāḥ ||
Sanjaya said: "In the morning of that terrible day, O lord of men, there began an exceedingly dreadful battle, rending the bodies of kings. In the fight of the Kurus and the Pandavas, who desired victory, the roar was like that of lions and filled heaven and earth. A jubilant clamor arose together with the clapping of hands and the sound of conch shells; lion-like shouts of heroes arose, answering one another with roars. Bowstrings rang out, struck by armguards, O best of the Bharatas; there was heard the tramp of footmen, the loud noise of horses, the strikes of whips and goads, the clang of weapons and the bells of elephants charging one another. When this deafening, hair-raising sound arose, there came the rumble of chariots, like the roll of a rain-cloud. Then the warriors, having hardened their minds and already parted with their lives, all advanced upon the Pandavas with banners raised."

Sanjaya describes war as a state of consciousness: before striking with weapons, warriors first make their minds cruel and renounce life itself. Where dharma has been cast aside, heroism swiftly takes the shape of a terrible resolve to destroy.
