गजानां पादरक्षास् तु व्यूढोरस्काः प्रहारिणः ॥
ऋष्टिभिश् च धनुर्भिश् च विमलैश् च परश्वधैः ॥
गदाभिर् मुसलैश् चैव भिण्डिपालैः सतोमरैः ॥
आयसैः परिघैश् चैव निस्त्रिंशैर् विमलैः शितैः ॥
प्रगृहीतैः सुसंरब्धा धावमानास् ततस् ततः ॥
व्यदृश्यन्त महाराज परस्परजिघांसवः ॥
राजमानाश् च निस्त्रिंशाः संसिक्ता नरशोणितैः ॥
प्रत्यदृश्यन्त शूराणाम् अन्योन्यम् अभिधावताम् ॥
अवक्षिप्तावधूतानाम् असीनां वीरबाहुभिः ॥
संजज्ञे तुमुलः शब्दः पततां परमर्मसु ॥
गदामुसलरुग्णानां भिन्नानां च वरासिभिः ॥
दन्तिदन्ताव् अभिन्नानां मृदितानां च दन्तिभिः ॥
तत्र तत्र नरौघाणां क्रोशताम् इतरेतरम् ॥
शुश्रुवुर् दारुणा वाचः प्रेतानाम् इव भारत ॥

ṛṣṭibhiś ca dhanurbhiś ca vimalaiś ca paraśvadhaiḥ ||
gadābhir musalaiś caiva bhiṇḍipālaiḥ satomaraiḥ ||
āyasaiḥ parighaiś caiva nistriṃśair vimalaiḥ śitaiḥ ||
pragṛhītaiḥ susaṃrabdhā dhāvamānās tatas tataḥ ||
vyadṛśyanta mahārāja parasparajighāṃsavaḥ ||
rājamānāś ca nistriṃśāḥ saṃsiktā naraśoṇitaiḥ ||
pratyadṛśyanta śūrāṇām anyonyam abhidhāvatām ||
avakṣiptāvadhūtānām asīnāṃ vīrabāhubhiḥ ||
saṃjajñe tumulaḥ śabdaḥ patatāṃ paramarmasu ||
gadāmusalarugṇānāṃ bhinnānāṃ ca varāsibhiḥ ||
dantidantāv abhinnānāṃ mṛditānāṃ ca dantibhiḥ ||
tatra tatra naraughāṇāṃ krośatām itaretaram ||
śuśruvur dāruṇā vācaḥ pretānām iva bhārata ||
The foot-guards of the elephants — broad-chested fighters — grasping spears, bows, gleaming battle-axes, maces, musalas, bhindipalas, tomaras, iron maces, and bright, sharp swords, rushed in great fury on every side, seeking to kill one another, O great king. Gleaming swords, drenched with human blood, were seen among the heroes as they hurled themselves upon one another. From the swords that the warriors' hands lowered and then swung up, a deafening sound arose as they fell upon vital spots. Everywhere terrible words were heard from streams of men shattered by maces and musalas, cleft by the finest swords, torn by elephants' tusks and crushed by elephants; they cried out to one another as if they were the voices of the dead, O Bharata.
